What If…? Season 3, Episode 7 Voice Cast: Who’s Who, From Storm To Byrdie The Duck?

We’re one episode away from the series finale of What If…? and the animated show pulled out the big guns. Or rather, the big hammer with the introduction of Storm of the X-Men holding Mjolnir and wielding the powers of Thor, in an episode that could only be called “What If… The Watcher Disappeared?” I guess. Anyway, you’re probably wondering who’s who in the What If…? Season 3, Episode 7 voice cast.

We’ll get to that in a moment, but first a recap of the episode, and spoilers past this point. We begin with the Nova Corps on Xandar fighting the otherworldly monster Captain Carter first fought in “What If… Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?” aka the premiere of the series. And in fact, this is the Xandar where Nebula runs the Nova Corps, from the Season 2 premiere, “What If… Nebula Joined The Nova Corps?”

Peggy isn’t alone this time, though, she’s got a team: Kahhori, from Season 2; Byrdie the Duck, the child of Howard The Duck and Darcy from earlier this season, now grown up; and none other than Storm of the X-Men, wielding Mjolnir. They beat the monster easily… At which point three shards from the Observational Plane, aka the place The Watcher watches from, fall right in front of them.

Since The Watcher has been taken by three other Watchers — The Eminence, The Incarnate, and The Executioner — the color is all sucked out of the credits, and the narration is different. Spooky! And then we’re over to the Watchers, who interrogate the Watcher, and they explain that if Captain Carter and those “exiles” attempt to find them, they will be stopped. Side-note: this is a not-so-stealth reference to the multiverse/time-hopping Marvel Comics team The Exiles, giving our four superpowered heroes a team name.

Back on The Exiles’s ship, they play foosball with a slew of Marvel character figurines and try to figure out what to do with the shards — clearly The Watcher is in trouble. First they take a ship that looks sort of like Kang’s ship from Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania and try to juice it up enough to head to the fifth dimension. It doesn’t work. Then Storm tries to juice up a second shard with Asgardian magic and lightning. That also doesn’t work.

With one shard left, Kahhori suggests a bad idea: why not try to somehow use Infinity Ultron, the villain from Season 1, to head to the Observational Plane? After all, he was able to head there after hearing The Watcher’s voice. And worst case, since they stole reset charges from the TVA (see Loki for more on what those are) they can always reset the timeline if they fail.

After a heart-to-heart between Peggy and Storm talking about what happens if they fail, the former looks at a team picture, with a bigger team. It includes the four currently on The Exiles, plus Gamora, Black Widow, Thor, and T’Challa. The implication is that the other four were lost or left the team at some point in the past — leading to a decision from Peggy… She’s going to do this on her own.

We get a brief recap of Infinity Ultron destroying the universe, but without the voice of The Watcher, he’s just standing at the end of time, alone, gathering dust (remember, this is a multiversal variant of Infinity Ultron, not the one we saw in Season 1). Peggy approached Infinity Ultron and…

…Back on the ship, Darcy and Howard ask Byrdie to bring them some donuts from the dimension where donuts help you lose weight, and she cuts them off when they realize Peggy is missing. They find her shield broken, but it wasn’t Infinity Ultron; it was The Watchers who took Peggy. And Infinity Ultron, alone at the end of the universe with time to reflect, wants to help them. So they jump to save Peggy and… To be continued!

What If…? Season 3, Episode 7 “What If… The Watcher Disappeared?” Cast: Who’s Who In The Voice Cast?

As indicated above, we have a slew of returning cast members here. So to briefly discuss them (more in previous cast breakdowns, linked above), Jeffrey Wright is The Watcher, Jason Isaacs is The Eminence, DC Douglas is The Incarnate, and Darin De Paul is The Executioner.

That takes care of our cue balls, but what about everyone else? Hayley Atwell is indeed back as the voice of Captain Carter, as she was in previous seasons of What If…? as well as the live-action version of the character in various movies and TV shows. Devery Jacobs also returns as Kahhori, from Season 2 of the series.

But the big one you’re probably wondering about is Storm, and you know it’s Alison Sealy-Smith, because who else could voice the goddess of lightning and thunder? Sealy-Smith has previously voiced Storm on X-Men: The Animated Series, 1995’s animated Spider-Man, and most recently on X-Men ’97.

Meanwhile, Natasha Lyonne voices the grown-up Byrdie The Duck, which if you thought of a child of Seth Green and Kat Dennings (who play Howard and Darcy, respectively), wouldn’t it be Natasha Lyonne? She’s starred in Russian Doll, Orange is the New Black, Poker Face, and much more. Recently she starred in His Three Daughters opposite Elizabeth Olsen and Carrie Coon.

Karen Gillan returns to the role of Nebula (briefly) as she did previously in What If…?, the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Taika Waititi also returns as Korg from Thor: Ragnarok, Thor: Love and Thunder, Endgame, and various episodes of What If…? Fred Tatasciore, meanwhile, best known for playing The Hulk in various Marvel animated series, does the voice of Groot because Vin Diesel couldn’t spare the five seconds to record a line, I guess.

Alexandra Daniels gets a credit as Captain Marvel for a quick flashback from Season 1, taking over for Brie Larson. And Ross Marquand plays Infinity Ultron — he’s taken over the role since Age of Ultron, and also done the voice of Red Skull, among many other characters.
