Invincible was already one of Image Comic‘s biggest titles, but its popularity skyrocketed after the Amazon Prime Video animated series debuted in 2021. With a massive amount of new fans, the interest in the source material also grew — and it will only get bigger, with the highly anticipated third season of the series debuting in February. Looking to prep for the impending return of the animated series? Good news, there’s a lot from this universe you can only explore through the comics, like its many spin-off titles. With our Invincible reading order, your universe is about to get much, much larger.
For starters, what’s Invincible all about? One day, regular teen Mark Grayson awakens with superpowers and doesn’t waste any time getting started fighting crime. But besides having the regular troubles adjusting to his new life, he has another problem… His father is Omni-Man, the greatest superhero ever. So how can he ever live up to that?
At first, Invincible‘s story seems quite simple. Luckily, Robert Kirkman, who also wrote The Walking Dead, is a master at surprising his audience. The series is full of twists and turns, constantly heading in unexpected directions.
Some other titles you can check out in the Invincible universe are Brit, Tech Jacket, and The Astounding Wolf-Man. They aren’t obligatory reads, but they do flesh out the world in interesting ways. Although there’s a clear focus on superheroes, each comic explores different themes and dynamics.
So where to start? Where to continue? And what do you need to read to get ready for Invincible Season 3 on Prime Video? Read on for the complete reading order of the Invincible Universe… So far.
SuperPatriot: America’s Fighting Force TP
Writer: Robert Kirkman
Artist: Cory Walker
Wait, the Invincible universe doesn’t start with Invincible? Well, yes and no. SuperPatriot is a pretty minor character, and is way more important in another Image Comics title, Savage Dragon. Still, he appears in a few issues of Invincible, so read this if you find him interesting.
Invincible Vol. 1: Family Matters TP
Writer: Robert Kirkman
Artist: Cory Walker
The start of everything! Mark Grayson finally awakens his superpowers, but being a hero won’t be as easy and fun as he thought. As you can see, the first volume is full of the usual superhero shenanigans we see everywhere in comics and love.

Writer: Robert Kirkman
Artist: Cory Walker, Ryan Ottley

Capes Vol. 1: Punching the Clock TP

Artist: Mark Englert
Capes is a 3-issue-long series following the titular team protecting New York. Many members, like Kid Thor, appear in several chapters of the main story later.

These two one-shots are some of the best spin-offs in this universe. They also introduce three regular characters from the main story, Brit (obviously), Donald, and Cecil.

Secrets are revealed little by little, and Invincible finds himself more lost than ever. What does the future (or more than 20 volumes) hold for him?
Invincible Vol. 4: Head of the Class TP
Writer: Robert Kirkman
Artist: Ryan Ottley
After some heartbreaking revelations, the tension steps down for a bit. Although it might make some people antsy for action, seeing Mark deal with life stuff and smaller problems is refreshing.
SuperPatriot: War on Terror #1-4
Writer: Robert Kirkman
Artist: E.J. Su
Speaking of life stuff, SuperPatriot also has a new challenge before him: adjusting to married life while superheroing.
Tech Jacket Vol. 1: The Boy From Earth

Writer: Robert Kirkman, Joe Keatinge, Aubrey Sitterson
Artist: E.J. Su, Khary Randolph
This volume concludes the first Tech Jacket run. Don’t worry, you’ll see him again in Invincible soon. The paperback includes Tech Jacket Digital, but it’s better to save it for later if you don’t want spoilers.
