Taking a page from their video game counterparts the Suicide Squad, Max’s Creature Commandos killed the Justice League in the latest episode. Yep, that’s right: James Gunn’s new DCU introduced the superhero team and killed them all off in one fell swoop.
Okay, that’s not exactly true, and to explain what happened, spoilers for Creature Commandos Episode 4, “Chasing Squirrels,” past this point.
Picking up after last week’s episode, the Commandos are back at Belle Reve, and Circe (Anya Chalotra) has been imprisoned by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). They want to know why she wants to kill Princess Ilana (Maria Bakalova), and more importantly why she claims the Commandos have doomed the world by saving her.
Turns out Circe is clairvoyant, something that is confirmed by Themyscria expert Aisla MacPherson (Stephanie Beatriz). She can’t create visions of the future, but she can share them — and that’s exactly what she does at Waller’s request.
What follows is a horror show depicting Ilana bringing nuclear destruction on the world, down to blowing up the Daily Planet, Gotham City, and even taking over the White House. By her side looks like the evil, psychic gorilla known as Gorilla Grodd, and put a pin in that for a second. But more to the purpose of this piece, we get a classic tableau of heroes all dead, impaled on spikes, skulls and bones on the ground.
Even more surprising for a cinematic universe that is technically four, 20ish minutes episodes old? There’s a whole array of DC heroes we haven’t met yet. Those include, in no particular order
- Superman (clearly in David Corenswet’s costume from the movie)
- Batman
- Wonder Woman
- Starfire
- Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi in Superman)
- Vigilante (Freddie Stroma on Peacemaker)
- Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced in Superman)
- Supergirl (Milly Alcock)
There are others, including what looks like might be Green Arrow and Robin, as well as Captain Atom. And Peacemaker (John Cena) is on the ground, his leg ripped off. Again, a pretty wild turn of events for a superhero universe that, thus far, hasn’t even announced whether they’re doing anything with Wonder Woman.
But for now, it’s all a vision that Circe is imparting to Waller. Is it something we’ll see come to fruition by the end of Creature Commandos Season 1? Is Ilana being manipulated by Grodd? Will the Justice League show up on the series? Or is this an even bigger event the DCU is leading to down the road? We’ve got three more weeks to find out.
