Since Wonder Woman #800, writer Tom King and artist Daniel Sampere have been wrecking Diana’s world, thanks to the introduction of a dastardly villain known as The Sovereign. That all ends in March’s Wonder Woman #19, which brings the battle to its titanic conclusion.
“Tom and I have really put Diana through the wringer in this arc,” said Sampere via a press release provided to Comic Book Club by DC Comics. “She’s celebrated the birth of her daughter, Trinity, and mourned the death of Steve Trevor, while dealing with the threat of the Sovereign at the same time. I’m so excited for readers to see what we have in store for this finale!”
While it may seem surprising the story is ending in March, its headed towards its natural conclusion. Spoilers past this point, but after wrecking the so-called King of America’s funds in previous issues, in this week’s issue Detective Chimp and Superman teamed up to expose The Sovereign to the world. And the tease is that there’s one more move to go before Wonder Woman herself steps in to take him down, for good.
And just to note, this is not the final issue for King and Sampere. Though they’re finishing off the mega-story they’ve been running involving The Sovereign, DC confirmed to Comic Book Club that they’ll be continuing on the title past this point.
The issue features a wraparound cover by Sampere, and variants by David Nakayama, Seba Fiumara, and Ramon Pérez, plus a “Courtside” card stock variant cover by Nicola Scott and Annette Kwok.
