‘Kraven The Hunter’ Slaughtered At Box Office With Trophy-less $11 Million Opening Weekend

Kraven the Hunter

Looks like nobody is on the hunt for tickets to Kraven the Hunter: the latest Sony/Marvel movie opened to an abysmal $11 million this weekend, in third place after Moana 2 and Wicked at the box office.

This is lower than the expected $15 million or so that was projected… Which in and of itself is a low for the “franchise.” By comparison, Morbius opened to $39 million in 2022, and Madame Web opened to $15.3 million earlier this year. Sony’s Venom series is an outlier with the first film grossing $80.3 million opening weekend, Let There Be Carnage $90 million, and two months back The Last Dance $51 million.

In the case of all three Venom movies, they made their money back — even the last one, mostly on the back of international grosses. Morbius, too, reportedly made back its budget, and Madame Web technically broke even at $100 million in box office, on a $80-$100 million budget. Kraven the Hunter might have a harder time doing that, thanks to a reported $110 million budget.

The two saving graces here are that the movie still has a number of countries to open in internationally, where they may be more forgiving of an action movie that jumps from Russia, to Africa, and beyond; and that it will be playing over the holidays, where it’s possible it might get some of that “sure, I got nothing to do” money.

Will those get Kraven the Hunter over the finish line for Sony? Likely not, and you’ll probably see Kraven on streaming sooner rather than later. However, nobody will be mounting any trophies on their walls for this one. And the chances of seeing a Kraven the Hunter 2, let alone any appearances of the many villains and characters set up in the movie (sorry, Doctor Miles Warren fans) are less than zero.

…Which is just under the amount of dollars Kraven made this weekend.
