Next year, Oni Press will publish Free For All #1, a reprint of Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees creator Patrick Horvath’s early comic book work. And to celebrate, the publisher is recruiting a murderer’s row of talent for a series of variant covers.
They include new pieces by Juni Ba, Noah Bailey, Matt Kindt, and Matt Lesniewski — as well as Horvath himself.
“I always felt like this story had a fairly universal appeal, and I’m excited for Oni Press to bring this book to a wide audience,” said Horvath via press release. “I was working through a lot of frustrations tied to income inequality at the time I made the comic, and it seems like all of it has only gotten worse. Now, maybe more than ever, it feels like the appropriate time for a satire where we watch billionaires fight to the death to keep all of their money.”
Added editor Megan Brown, “FREE FOR ALL is an incredibly prescient story for an increasingly tumultuous world, and our amazing cover artists—whose work you can see here!—did a wonderful job of capturing the bloody binge culture in full technicolor. Spectacle, excess, and more await readers in the pages of Patrick Horvath’s wonderfully macabre—and timely—tale.”
Here’s the synopsis:
In the future, the World Finance League exists to benefit all, randomly choosing those from among the billionaires and trillionaires of the world and presenting them with a choice: either donate half of their assets to the common good — or defend them in ritual combat.
Reigning champion and real estate magnate Ted Brooks has 22 victories under his belt — defending the wealth he schemed and stabbed to get — when he is forced to face his ex-wife, Luella Dominguez, in a fight to the death. Luella has been training, waiting for this moment. But will she have what it takes to defeat the man who would do anything — absolutely anything — to keep his fortune?
