Marvel launches South Korean superteam.

This is Comic Book Club News for December 12, 2024.

Robert Kirkman And Ryan Ottley Return To Invincible Universe:

You can’t keep a good universe down. And the Invincible team of Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley are back with Invincible Universe: Battle Beast, a new series hitting stores in April 2025.

Said Kirkman via press release: “What can I say? I just can’t get enough of the Invincible Universe! Moving from the comic series directly to the animated series, I haven’t really had a break. That said, while adapting the series to animation, I’ve been itching to do something new! Longtime fans will know there’s a massive gap in Battle Beast’s appearances in the series between Invincible issue 19 and issue 55. There’s a lot of story to tell and I couldn’t be more thrilled to have Battle Beast co-creator Ryan Ottley on board to tell it with me!”

The first new Invincible comic to hit stores in seven years, this will debut right after Invincible Season 3 wraps up on Prime Video, making it (potentially) the perfect jumping on point for fans of the animated show.

The new book will find Battle Beast searching the universe for someone more powerful than himself. And it will launch with an interesting promo. Per PR from Skybound, “Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #1 also features a first-of-its-kind blind bag program that allows fans a chance to get ANY of the solicited covers from A through I. However, there are rare SURPRISE comics that may or may not be related to Battle Beast or the Invincible Universe that can be found in these blind bags. Those SURPRISE comics will not be publicly announced in advance of the issue release.”

Wild. Battle Beast #1 will hit stores on April 16, 2025.

BOOM! Studios Is Leaving Diamond For Penguin Random House:

BOOM! Studios is leaving Diamond Comic Distributors for Penguin Random House. Which isn’t too surprising, as PRH now owns the company.

Per ICv2, the change will happen next summer, with Penguin now handling BOOM!’s primary distribution to both comic book stores, and bookstores. Diamond previously handled BOOM!’s books for comic book stores, while Simon & Schuster handled bookstores.

If you’re not a comic book or book store owner, though, the differences shouldn’t be noticeable, as comics will still come out from BOOM! as they always have. And in fact at this time, it’s not known whether Diamond may operate as an additional distributor of BOOM! books, as it does for other publishers. Currently, PRH handles primary distribution for Marvel, Dark Horse, IDW, and Lunar handles DC and Image. But with the exception of DC, who is exclusive to Lunar, many comic book stores still prefer to put in one order form, through Diamond.

Will that change as more of the industry moves away from the monolith? TBD.

South Korean Superteam Becomes Doom’s Division In Marvel Event:

Marvel’s South Korean super hero team Tiger Division is back… Working for Doctor Doom.

Written by Yoon Ha Lee with art by Mikyu Jung, the five issue series will be titled Doom’s Division, and find the team working for the dictator as part of the One World Under Doom event.

Said Jung via press release: “South Korea has a painful history, but we always overcome them, and this time, Marvel’s South Korean super hero team is facing tough times. I can’t wait to see how they are going to show that spirit during ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM and I’m grateful to be a part of this event.”

In the series, with Doctor Doom now Emperor of the Earth, the team is charged with keeping order throughout the Marvel universe. Needless to say, not all of them agree with the edict.

The first issue hits stores on March 26, 2025.
