Marvel Editor Teases “Big” Announcement… Is It A Comic Adaptation Of ‘Big’?

Big 1988 movie piano scene

Yesterday morning (December 10), Marvel Editor Mark Paniccia teased that “big” news was coming from the publisher within the next day, and we’d know it when we saw it. With over 24 hours since the post, and no news yet, allow us to speculate wildly: is this finally the long-awaited comic book adaptation of the 1988 Tom Hanks movie Big?

Here’s the post that Paniccia put on X (formerly Twitter):

“BIG news coming from MARVEL COMICS within the next day. When I say ‘big’ you’ll know what I meant”

This is followed by an enigmatic smiley-face emoji which I can’t put on this website because Wordpress hates it when I do that. But the winky nature of Paniccia’s post seems to indicate something is up. And his emphasis of the word “big” got me thinking…

Big, a movie which features Tom Hanks as a child who wishes to be big and then becomes an adult who dances on a large piano in F.A.O. Schwartz and uncomfortably has sex with an adult woman is a classic. And more to the point, it comes from 20th Century Fox, the company now known as 20th Century, which is part of the same parent company as Marvel (that would be Disney).

Not only that, but Marvel has been upping the content of their line of comics adapting and continuing 20th Century properties. Alien: Paradiso, the latest Alien comic, hit stores today. Predator vs. Black Panther just wrapped up, and is leading up to next year’s Predator vs. Spider-Man (RIP, Spider-Man). And Avengers vs. Aliens is coming out every few months, too. Plus there have been several Planet of the Apes comics. So why not branch out into other properties?

Sure, Big doesn’t seem the most likely for a Marvel Comics expansion or crossover. But don’t you think a kid with wishing powers who becomes an adult could have some fun in the Marvel Comics universe? Maybe he meets Spider-Boy, who also wishes to be big. Or he plays a large saxophone with Drax in F.A.O. Space Schwartz. Or maybe the Punisher kills him, I don’t know, just spitballing here.

Whatever the plan is, fingers crossed we finally get that Big comic in some form, as everyone has been asking for it non-stop for decades. And then if it’s a hit, we can finally get Big vs. Splash.

We have not reached out to Marvel to confirm this, because that would be embarrassing.
