The Penguin has snagged three Golden Globe nominations in this year’s awards, marking the first for the fledging DC Studios.
Those awards include Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series, Or Motion Picture Made for Television; Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, Or A Motion Picture Made For Television for Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone; and Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, Or A Motion Picture Made For Television for Colin Farrell for Oswald Cobb.
While this isn’t the first Golden Globe nomination for DC in general, with The Penguin, Creature Commandos, and Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story the first out of the gate for the rebranded DC Studios, this is a strong start — even if it’s not technically part of the new DCU.
There’s some strong competition, though. In the Limited Series category (going to shorten that name for my own sanity), The Penguin is competing against Netflix’s Baby Reindeer, Monsters: the Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, and Ripley. Apple TV+’s Disclaimer and HBO’s True Detective: Night Country are also up for the award.
Competing against Milioti for Female Actor are Cate Blanchett for Disclaimer, Jodie Foster for True Detective, Sofía Vergara for Griselda, Naomi Watts for Feud: Capote vs. the Swans, and Kate Winslet for The Regime.
Competing against Farrell for Male Actor are Richard Gadd for Baby Reindeer, Kevin Kline for Disclaimer, Cooper Koch for Monsters, Ewan McGregor for A Gentleman in Moscow, and Andrew Scott in Ripley.
Will The Penguin nab any of those awards? Maybe! The Golden Globes are traditionally all over the place, and based more on who they would like to see accept an award than who deserves an award (though the two occasionally intersect). We’ll know more when they air live on CBS and stream on Paramount+ on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
