This is Comic Book Club News for December 9, 2024.

Acolyte Fans Upset Over Marvel Black History Variant Covers:

Late last week Marvel unveiled a series of variant covers for their Star Wars books for Black History month, showcases characters of color throughout the galaxy. While the covers were universally praised for the art, they did reignite other concerns about the content. Specifically when it comes to highlighting characters from the canceled Disney+ series The Acolyte.

The four Black History Variant covers come from artists Karen S. Darboe, Ken Lashley, Mateus Manhanini, and Ernanda Souza, and spotlight Lando, of course, and Vail from the recent video game Star Wars Outlaws. Meanwhile, the two others include Osha and Mae, and Mother Aniseya, both from Star Wars: The Acolyte.

Over on Feminegra, the site covered the announcement, but noted that, “While comics expand Star Wars narratives, fans and cast members have made it clear that they want more… Comics alone cannot satisfy the desire for representation and compelling storytelling in a galaxy far, far away.”

Writer Richard Newby was harsher, noting on Bluesky, “Lucasfilm must be feeling very bold to have these Black History month Star Wars covers after how they handled The Acolyte. Corporations need to stop using inclusivity for commerce unless they can stand behind those projects and the people in them.”

The covers will hit from Marvel starting next February. Whether they’ll cause any further conversation internally at Disney? TBD.

Gary Frank Is Coming Back To Geiger:

Gary Frank is coming back to the title he helped create in Geiger #10 from Ghost Machine and Image Comics. But Frank won’t be the only character to pop up in the issue written by Geoff Johns… Junkyard Joe, everyone’s favorite war-torn robot, is back, too.

Said Johns via press release: “Issue #10 evolves Geiger’s struggle between the man and the monster as we reach a true turning point in the life of The Glowing Man, a shocking conclusion readers won’t want to miss.”

While it’s neat that Frank and Joe are coming back to the title, there’s also one big debut: a cover by Dylan Dietrich, who was the recipient of the Ghost Machine Scholarship to the Joe Kubert School. Congrats to Dietrich, and yo Joe!

Nightwing Rebirth Gets An Omnibus:

Nightwing: Rebirth, the series that kicked off in 2016, is getting a massive omnibus. Running a whopping 1,492 pages, if this was a Jason Todd omnibus we’d say it’s big enough to kill him with. But it’s not.

Kicking off with the Nightwing: Rebirth one-shot, the volume will contain 49 issues of Nightwing, as well as related issues of Batgirl, Batman, Detective Comics, and several one-shots and other appearances. It will include stories written by Tim Seeley, and art by Javi Fernandez, Marcus To, Bernard Chang, and others.

The book will cost $125 and hit stores on April 22, 2025.
