Chris Evans is returning to the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday, though it’s unknown at this time whether he’ll be playing Captain America, or something else.
The original report comes from The Wrap, who are similarly murky on details other than “he’s back.” This would actually mark the second time Evans returned to the MCU after Avengers: Endgame, including his appearance as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine.
So why the secrecy around his role? We know Robert Downey Jr. is returning not as Tony Stark, but as the villain Doctor Doom. So could Evans also be playing a villain in the movie? Pure speculation but I’d say that’s very likely — and in fact there could be some sort of Evil Avengers assembled by Doom including Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, and Jeremy Renner. At the very least, the MCU heroes being presented by characters who look like Iron Man, Black Widow, and Captain America*, three characters who died in Endgame, would be a potentially emotionally fraught plot point to play with.
(*Captain America didn’t die, but he got old and most of the MCU thinks he’s dead. Or on the moon.)
All we know for sure about the movie at this point is that it’s directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, and will not only star Downey Jr. and Evans, but also the casts of Thunderbolts* and Fantastic Four, as well as others.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on May 1, 2026.
