The premiere of Creature Commandos is here, and with it the official debut of James Gunn’s DCU. And not only that, but spoilers past this point, in the opening minutes of Episode 1, “The Collywobbles,” we get a big introduction of a classic DC location Themyscira, home of the Amazons. So is Wonder Woman next in line to debut on the show?
Well… Probably not. Mostly because unless there’s a huge surprise coming, the role hasn’t been cast yet. But this tease of Themyscira is a surprising swerve for the new DCU, mainly because while plans have been announced for Superman and Batman, news about the third part of the Trinity — Wonder Woman — has been mostly absent.
Here’s the gist of how Themyscira shows up, if you haven’t watched the episode. In the series, a group of, shall we say, proud boys called the Sons of Themyscira, led by the witch Circe (Anya Chalotra) are attacking the nation of Pokolistan as part of their effort to force the female-only island to accept them onto its shores.
However, as explained by special guest star Jake Tapper on a news report, Themyscira is mythical, at best. That means that the woman-only island isn’t part of the lore of the DCU yet, though as we’ll likely discover when Superman hits theaters next year, there are plenty of other superheroes active in the universe.
If you’re confused about what’s going on here having seen Gal Gadot star in several DC movies… Well, that’s okay, it’s sort of confusing. In this new universe, and in Creature Commandos in particular, most of Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad are canon; but not all of it. Pretty much everything else DC Comics based prior to this has been washed clean, though James Gunn reserve the right to bring things back if they’re good and make sense for the stories they’re telling in these new movies and TV shows.
That means the events of Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984 are not canon. And though there’s been a fair amount of back and forth on this, it seems likely Gadot will not return to the role of Wonder Woman going forward.
Instead, we’ll be getting a new actress playing Wonder Woman, whenever she shows up. As for when and where that will be? TBA. We’ve got a new Superman, played by David Corenswet. Batman hasn’t been cast yet, but will potentially be showing up in the in development Brave and the Bold. Meanwhile, the only word we’ve gotten something about Wonder Woman related is a potential Game of Thrones style Themyscira series that was announced when Gunn initially announced the plans for the DCU. Since then, though, we haven’t heard anything further.
So will Wonder Woman show up on Creature Commandos? Will the Amazons? And will there be a Wonder Woman in the DCU at all? We’ve still got a few more weeks to find out.
