Creature Commandos has finally arrived on Max, kicking off James Gunn’s new DCU in all its monstrous glory. While this isn’t live action, it’s animation, these are actors you’ll want to know… Particularly because some of them will be making their way to the live-action portion of the DCU. So with that in mind, you’re probably wondering who’s who in the Creature Commandos voice cast for Episode 1.
Before we get there, a brief bit of recap about what happens in the series premiere, “The Collywobbles.” And spoilers past this point. The main conflict of the series, at least in the premiere? A bunch of proud boys calling themselves the Sons of Themyscira, led by evil sorceress Circe (Anya Chalotra), are attacking the country of Pokolistan on their way to try and invade the all-female island that birthed Wonder Woman.
Enter Amanda Waller and her second-in-command Rick Flag Sr., who have been barred from using human beings after the events of The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, Season 1. Waller has another plan, though: she’s got monsters being held in the Belle Reeve Non-Human Internment Division. Since they’re not technically human, they can be brought together under Flag’s supervision to form Task Force M, aka the Creature Commandos.
…And that’s what happens. Flag brings The Bride, G.I. Robot, Weasel, Doctor Phosphorus, and Nina Mazursky on a trip to protect Pokolistan. There, they meet the country’s beautiful Princess Ilana, who Flag immediately develops a crush on. And most of the episode is a waiting game as we set up the various relationships.
Nina is the nice one, and seems to have a semi-romantic interest in G.I. Robot, who is mostly concerned with killing Nazis. Doctor Phosphorus doesn’t want to be electrocuted by the device Flag holds (replacing Waller’s brain-bombs that she uses for Task Force X). And Weasel just eats everything in sight. Oh, and The Bride has some secrets of her own in Pokolistan.
Other notable bits from the episode? Ilana gets naked and tries to seduce Flag, but he backs off. Doctor Phosphorus and Flag have a knock-down drag-out fight throughout the castle. And Nina follows The Bride outside into Pokolistan, where they go back to the place “where I was born,” teases The Bride.
And the final bit of the episode? An old lady across the street with Zac Efron on her phone screen calls Eric Frankenstein, who is on a party boat. “My bride,” says the monster. “After all these years, I’ve found you.”
Okay, recap out of the way, let’s break down who’s who in the main cast, as well as the guest stars.
Creature Commandos Season 1, Episode 1 “The Collywobbles” Cast: Who’s Who In The Cast?
Let’s start with the characters making their way over from other DC properties (aka what was called the DCEU). While this is the first series in the new DCU, the idea here is that Gunn (and company) is picking and choosing elements to bring over. So that means that Viola Davis does indeed return as Amanda Waller here, after playing the character in Suicide Squad, The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker Season 1, and Black Adam.
Also making his way over? Weasel, who is voiced by Sean Gunn, James Gunn’s brother. As Waller notes in the episode, the supposed child-killer was the only survivor from the first assault on Corto Maltese, at the beginning of The Suicide Squad. Gunn also voices G.I. Robot, who is new for this series.
While he’s new to the DCU, Rick Flag Sr. also has a tie to previous continuity. Voiced by Frank Grillo, who you might know as Crossbones from the MCU, he’s the father of Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman), who was killed by Peacemaker (John Cena) in The Suicide Squad. That’s something Flag Sr. is clearly reeling from in this series, and will be dealing with when he appears in live-action in Peacemaker Season 2.
That’s it for characters with ties to the DCEU, let’s talk DCU newbies. Alan Tudyk, the man of a thousand voices, appears as the radioactive Doctor Phosphorus. You might know him best as Wash from Firefly, or his lead role on SYFY’s Resident Alien. Or for playing the chicken Heihei in Moana. He also does the voice of “Surfer Son” in this episode.
Indira Varma is The Bride. She’s been in dozens of projects, but is likely most recognizable as Ellaria Sand from Game of Thrones. She was also Suzie Costello on Torchwood, Tala Durith on Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Zoe Luther on Luther.
Zoë Chao, who plays the voice of the kind fishwoman Nina Mazursky, played Zoë Zhu on the late, great Apple TV+ series The Afterparty, and was excellent as Sara Yang on Max’s Love Life. She also played Lucy Dang on the third season of Party Down.
Another talented comedian, Maria Bakalova plays the voice of Princess Ilana, as well as the Old Woman with the Zac Efron lock-screen. Bakalova rose to fame for her co-starring role in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, and has since starred in Bodies Bodies Bodies, and The Apprentice. More to the point of this show, though, she also played the voice of Cosmo the Spacedog in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, and the Holiday Special.
While he only appears briefly, David Harbour is the voice of Eric Frankenstein, which is funny because he starred in a highly underrated Netflix special titled Frankenstein’s Monster’s Monster, Frankenstein. You probably know him best as Sheriff Hopper from Stranger Things, or as Red Guardian from Black Widow and the upcoming Thunderbolts*.
That brings us to guest voices, and the most prominent one? Yes, that is CNN’s Jake Tapper as the voice of the Reporter in the beginning of the episode. Tony Cavalero, who plays Keefe Chambers on HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones, is the voice of “Incel Son.” Julian Kostov, who voices Alexi/Knight in this episode, is likely best known for his recurring role as Fedyor Kaminsky on Netflix’s Shadow and Bone. And Nickolai Stoilov voices Cabbie/Server, and has also voiced roles in several iterations of the Call of Duty series.
