Rob Liefeld Defends Frank Miller For Marvel Cover Art:
Rob Liefeld is coming to Frank Miller’s defense for the frequent criticism of his current Marvel Comics cover art. And as someone who has suffered his fair share of criticism over the years, it’s an interesting read.
In the blog post, Liefeld hits the notes you would expect: Miller is a legend, and deserves respect, and changed the industry. However, the more interesting take occurs a few paragraphs in. Writes Liefeld: “As to his latest covers, yeah, they’re sort of rough. It’s a rough style. A specifically rough approach. It’s the exact style he’s been utilizing for the past 25 years since his final days on Sin City, prior to his Dark Knight Strikes Again, the sequel to Dark Knight released in 2001.”
Liefeld continues to explain that Miller was inspired by Tony Millionaire and Paul Pope back in 2001 to expand his style. And that he’s “deliberately crafting this new style as he has been evolving over the past 3 decades.”
Whether you agree or not, as Liefeld concludes: the covers are relevant… Because you’re talking about them.
Dark Horse Brings Critical Role And Black Hammer To FCBD:
Dark Horse is bringing Critical Role and Black Hammer to Free Comic Book Day 2025.
Per the publisher, in the issue, the first story will be titled Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins – Acquired Taste, and feature Beau and Caleb heading to some dinner theater, when some surprising new faces show up.
Then in Black Hammer: To Tomorrow!, per PR, “Colonel Weird takes a jaunt through the ages, passing old friends and foes along the way… This is a look at the past and potential future of Black Hammer!”
The Critical Role story is written by Sam Maggs with art by Leonardo Cino, and Black Hammer is by Jeff Lemire, with art by Letizia Cadonici.
Free Comic Book Day will be held next year on Saturday, May 3.
Mad Cave Announces Crush Depth:
Mad Cave Studios has announced a new title from the creators of Morning Star: Crush Depth.
Written by Tim Daniel and David “DB” Andry, the horror/action series will feature art by Alex Sanchez, and focus on two brothers trying to wrestle control from each other of a nuclear submarine. Meanwhile, the chief science officer finds herself caught in the middle with only two options: head to a surface that’s been altered by climate change, or head down into the depths and crush the submarine.
Pulling inspiration from everything from The Thing to Annihilation to The Abyss, Crush Depth will hit stores on March 19, 2025.
For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And oh man, I am totally crushing on that depth.
