While Portacio Covers ‘Iron Man’ For Marvel

Iron Man #5 cover crop

Whilce Portacio is an iconic Iron Man artist. And while he isn’t returning to the character full time, he will provide variant covers for Iron Man #3-#5 from Marvel Comics – and we’ve got a first look at the covers, below.

“Whilce Portacio is one of the most unique and visually dynamic artists in the history of comics,” Iron Man writer Spencer Ackerman said via press release provided to Comic Book Club. “Even before we learned we’d be blessed with Whilce’s variant covers, Julius and I talked about how we could incorporate the tangle of cables that Whilce used to show how powerful the Heroes Reborn-era Iron Man suit was. You’ll see Julius directly homage Whilce’s legendary design in our third issue.”

In the new run, Ackerman and artist Julius Ohta have introduced an improvisational approach to Tony Stark’s armor, with the new suit getting “tinkering and upgrading it as the series progresses.” And per the release, the duo looked at Portacio’s work during the ’90s for inspiration… So bringing in the artist for covers is a nice full-circle moment.

In the covers, Portacio depicts the “Heroes Reborn” armor, which was designed by the artist. The second depicts the “Improvised Armor.” And the third one shows the armor powering up for the first time. The pieces are all colored by Alex Sinclair.
