This is Comic Book Club News for December 3, 2024.
Kate Beaton’s Ducks Wins Jan Michalski Prize, The First Graphic Novel To Do So:
Kate Beaton’s excellent Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands may have come out in 2022, but it just cannot stop winning awards. The latest? The Jan Michalski Prize, which makes the OGN the first graphic novel to win the honor.
Per The Beat, the global honor for literature comes with a cash prize of 50,000 Swiss Francs and “their choice of a work of art to keep.” I’d personally choose the Mona Lisa if that’s the case, but I’m not sure it’s up for grabs.
If you’re confused why and how Ducks just won this prize, it’s because this year’s award covers 2021-2024. While previous graphic novels including Chris Ware’s Building Stories have been up for the prize, they’ve never made it past the first round. Congrats to Beaton, and go read Ducks!
Marvel Two-In-One Gets An Omnibus:
The classic team-up book Marvel Two-In-One is getting an omnibus, but only one of them.
Per ICv2, the 888-page collection will include include everything from a two-parter in 1971’s Marvel Feature, to 35 issues of Marvel Two-In-One, to a Fantastic Four annual and one issue of Marvel Team-Up. If you’re not familiar with the title, it teamed up The Thing with a rotating cast of characters, and included work by Steve Gerber, Bill Mantlo, Marv Wolfman, Len Wein, Chris Claremont, Sal Buscema, Jim Starlin, Herb Trimpe, and many more.
The original series ran for 100 issues, so presumably if Marvel Two-in-One Omnibus, Vol. 1 does well, there may be a volume 2 to pair with it. The collection hits stores on June 18, 2025.
DC Universe Infinite Goes Global:
DC Universe Infinite, the DC Comics digital subscription service, is going global.
Per the publisher, the service is now available in France, Italy, Germany and Spain, joining Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, and is scheduled to launch in Brazil and Mexico on December 16.
Said DC Senior Vice President and General Manager Anne DePies via press release: “Bringing DC UNIVERSE INFINITE and DC GO! to fans worldwide has been a top priority as we continue to connect with our global audience with access to DC’s iconic Super Hero content. Providing a subscription platform offering our vast library of comics gives fans around the world a unique opportunity to access their favorite stories at their fingertips, anytime, anywhere.”
The service contains over 30,000 comics with an Ultra subscription, as well as digital exclusive DC GO! vertical scrolling comics. New titles are added six months after hitting stores, and you can sign up during the first 30 days of the service’s debut in your country for a 15% discount.
