Faster than a speeding bullet, that’s it for Superman & Lois. The series finale aired tonight on The CW, and with it ended not just four seasons of the show, but decades of superhero series on the network. But that’s the overarching, worldview… You probably just want a Superman & Lois ending explained.
Hey, great news, dude: that’s what this article is all about. We’ll recap the series finale of Superman & Lois, Season 4, Episode 10 “It Went By So Fast.” And then we’ll explain how it all ended. Did Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) die? Do the Supersons finally get costumes? And are there are any surprise Arrowverse cameos? We’ll answer all of those questions and more.
So read on, as we explain the ending of an era.
Superman & Lois Series Finale Recap:
Things kick off in a surprising place: with Lana Lang (Emmanuelle Chriqui) and John Henry Irons (Wolé Park) on a pool date. She’s ready to call it quits on their relationship when Doomsday attacks, looping us back to the end of last week’s episode. And in the process, John gets injured.
Meanwhile, back in the main fight, Superman won’t let Jon (Michael Bishop) or Jordan (Alex Garfin) help him fight the monster, with Lois digging into first Amanda McCoy (Yvonne Chapman), then — more importantly — Clark. But first, the Supersons step up by distracting Doomsday with their heat vision, and a chase through the woods.
“They have you, that has to be enough,” Lois tells Superman, which is enough to convince him to let them help him. Add Lana and John Henry, who hatch a plan: they’ve got John’s hammer. The Supersons lure Doomsday to Main Street, Superman dodges his punch, and Doomsday gets conked in the head with the hammer. RIP Doomsday, though he could come back at any point. To make sure that doesn’t happen, Superman flies to the sun with Doomsday to leave him there. Remember, he’s Bizarro Superman, deep down, so anything good for Superman is bad for Doomsday.
And indeed, Superman does fly him to the son… But as the Man of Steel is about to deliver a blow, Doomsday holds out his hand, and remembers his life as Bizarro. Superman lightly pushes him, and Doomsday falls, Jesus-style, into the sun, burning into ash.
Meanwhile, back on Earth, Luthor tells Amanda she betrayed him, to which she angrily explains she was in Smallville and nearly died… So she resigns from LuthorCorp. So he tries to kill her with a missile. Classic couple stuff.
The Supersons save her, and Lois tells Amanda, “You helped create this problem. Now you’re going to fix it.” She also explains about Milton Fine (Nikolai Witschl), and John, incensed, decides to go after him.
Before Luthor can get there, Lois tries to live-stream with Amanda… But Milton shuts them down. And then Lex arrives, knocking Jon into the hotel off Main Street, and nearly choking Jordan to death. After threatening Lois, they use the prototype to damage Lex’s suit, but it doesn’t stop him. Unfortunately for Lex, Superman charged up at the sun, and takes him out — only to get stabbed by krytponite.
Jon, it turns out, is in worse shape than we thought… He’s not breathing, but Jordan pretty much blows him up giving him CPR, bringing him back to life.
And over in Metropolis, John and the D.O.D. take out Milton, and force him to to get the cameras back on. Lex and Superman fight, despite the latter being stabbed with multiple chunks of kryptonite, which Superman eventually smashes to dust (which seems like it would be bad but I guess not?).
Back to full power, Superman tells Luthor he’ll never hurt another person. “You came after my wife. My family. My town? But all that ends. Right. Now!” And then he punches Luthor so hard the suit breaks right off him in the sky. Luthor falls to the ground… And of course, Superman saves him, as Lana films the whole thing.
“It’s over,” Superman says.
But nope! Not quite over, there’s still half the episode to go.
One year later, Chrissy Beppo (Sofia Hasmik) and Kyle Cushing (Erik Valdez) are at the Kent Farm with their little baby… For the wedding of Lana and John! Clark walks Lana down the aisle. Lois is officiating, and recaps their individual histories. “You truly are a man of steel,” Lois tells John.
And they get married as the rest of the cast looks on lovingly, then dances the night away in the barn… And we even find out that Chrissy is going to have another baby — this time, Lana tells them it’s a boy, and Chrissy runs off giving Kyle and Lana time to talk, and have one last dance together.
Outside the wedding, Sarah (Inde Navarrette) tells Jordan that spending a year abroad has taught her that she does not, indeed want to live in Smallville. And asking Jordan the same, whether he’s happy being a hero? “Yeah,” Jordan says. “I am.”
Rounding out the supporting cast conversations, John talks to his daughter Natalie (Tayler Buck), and she tells him that despite being in the wrong universe, “it feels like home.”
Inside the house, Clark and Lois talk, and Clark is pensive. “What do you think Lois and Clark will be remembered for?”
“I’d like to think truth and justice,” Lois says.
“And a better tomorrow,” adds Clark.
And as a capper, Lex Luthor has been denied an appeal, and is being sent to Stryker’s for life. This time, he’s going to be a regular prisoner — no special treatment. And he’s no longer top dog in the prison… That’s Bruno Mannheim (Chad L. Coleman). “The man in charge needs a good chair,” Mannheim tells him. “And you, Alexander Luthor, are going to make a hell of a chair.”
Superman & Lois Ending Explained: Do Superman & Lois Die?
“The first time I died, there was nothing but darkness,” Superman says. And the entire end of the episode is narration from Superman, over a series of scenes that range from heartbreaking to wildly bizarre.
We discover that Superman lived for 32 more years, and he realized it wasn’t enough to be a “hero who saves people, I wanted to connect with them.” Knowing the world was broken beyond just , he gave his sons costumes, tried to help the homeless, helped develop new medical techniques… Basically, rather than just punching things, he and Lois established a foundation, and helped the world in different ways.
Jon and Jordan got married (not to each other), and had kids. “Lots of kids,” explains Superman. “It was such a joy to be around. Lois and I felt incredibly lucky.”
Also, Jon and Jordan are replaced by some large men we’ve never seen before. Welcome, Large Adults Supersons:
More seriously, for the rest of their life, Clark and Lois never spent a day apart, Clark continues to explain. “That was a magical time. Every day a little better than the last.”
Then… Lois’s cancer came back. “Only this time it was too much.” We see Clark staying at Lois’s bedside, as the Large Adult Supersons look on. “Everything good in my life, it came from you,” he tells her, sobbing. And as she dies, she says, “dad,” giving a little preview of what’s about to happen.
Superman explains that “it was never the same after.” While the kids came by nearly every day, but the world “felt less. She was missing.” So what did he do? He got a dog… Named Krypto. “Seriously, how did I never have a dog before?” Superman says, doing everything but winking at the audience that has been asking for this for four seasons.
“And then, just like that… My heart gave out,” Clark shockingly said. Remember, he has a human heart from Lois’s father Sam Lane (Dylan Walsh). He doesn’t die, thanks to some CPR from Kyle, but “my time was running out.”
“The second time I died, was so much different from the first,” Clark explains, as his LAS (Large Adult Supersons) wait at his bedside. “It was amazing.”
And, no joke, Clark turns into a ghost:
Yep, he’s entered the afterlife, which just so happens to be the Kent house. Thanks, reduced CW budget! As Clark wanders the house, and sees his boys — who I don’t believe are dead, but are children again — he continues to narrate.
“And suddenly it came to me, what life is all about,” Clark says. “Joy. Hope.” Clark walks over and sees Luthor sitting a the table, and forgives him. “Forgiveness.” He sees Krypto, too. Then Kyle and Chrissy, examples of “friendship.” Then John and Lana, representative of “family.”
But what’s the most important thing? “Love,” of course, which is Lois, showing up in a red dress. “God she’s beautiful. I came to this world alone. And when I left I had so much and it was all because of her… Do everything you can to find love. To give it. To hold on to it. Because life, it goes by so fast.”
And as Lois and Clark kiss, the camera turns to white, and we get a golden version of the Superman & Lois logo. The end! And yes, to actually put some explanation in this ending explained… Lois died of cancer, Clark died of a weak heart after 32 years, and they were reunited in the afterlife. Goodbye, Superman & Lois. Adios, Arrowverse. Sayonara, superhero shows on The CW. Thank you for decades of fun times, heartbreak, and wonderful memories.
Will There Be A Superman & Lois Season 5?
Nope! That’s it for Superman & Lois, as well as the Arrowverse and superhero shows on The CW. It’s the end of an era for real. So to be clear, Superman & Lois Season 4, Episode 10, “It Went By So Fast” is definitively the final episode of the series. And it did, indeed, go by so fast.
