Transformers: Worst Bot Ever Gets A Preview On Free Comic Book Day 2025:
Skybound is bringing the Worst Bot Ever to Free Comic Book Day! Featuring the first appearance of Ballpoint, a Decepticon who is also a ballpoint pen, the preview special will also include an advance look at YA OGN Family Force V.
Created by Brian “Smitty” Smith Marz Jr., Worst Bot Ever introduces a totally original Transformer who gets kicked out of the Decepticons — and decides to take down the Autobots all by himself, to prove his worth. Will the pen prove to be mightier than Optimus Prime’s sword?
Said Alex Antone, Editorial Director at Skybound: “We are thrilled to announce that Skybound’s first original Decepticon is officially the WORST BOT EVER. With Ballpoint, Smitty and Marz Jr. have created a character that is both heartfelt and hilarious, and we can’t wait to show the world how terrible he is.”
Meanwhile, Family Force V follows a family of superheroes who fight aliens, from Matt Braly and Ainsworth Lin. That book will hit stores in June 2025, while the full Worst Bot Ever OGN debuts in July 2025.
You can check out the preview issue on May 3, 2025, in participating comic book stores.
IDW Revamps App:
IDW recently revamped its logo — but that’s not the only thing the publisher is updating for 2025. The IDW app is back with a free comics reading platform that includes everything from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees.
Per IDW, the new app features a “revamped search function,” and an offline mode which allows readers to download comics and — you guessed it — read them offline. However the most intriguing new function is the ability to choose to read comics horizontally or vertically. Though as of right now that seems to iterate as flipping pages by scrolling right to left, or up and down, it potentially gives IDW the option to add comics in the relatively newer vertical format that has been adopted by some other companies.
The new app is live now and features new releases like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Naruto #1, Star Trek: Lower Decks #1, and much more.
Heavy Metal Hits Kickstarter:
The classic magazine Heavy Metal has hit Kickstarter. And in just one day has blasted past its $5,000 goal to hit, as of this recording, over $240,000.
Part of the reason, beyond the legacy of the sci-fi/fantasy/horror comics classic? A wild array of creators. Some of the names that may be more known to listeners of this podcast include Michael Conrad, who is working on a “top secret saga” and covers from Greg Hildebrandt and Frank Frazetta.
The project has a slew of other creators involved including Leah Moore, Jose Oritz and more. And you can pledge now until Sunday, December 29.
For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And I thought the title of that book was “worst pod ever” for a second and got scared.
