Superman & Lois has one episode left to go after this week, and they’re going out big. Spoilers past this point, but not only did Season 4, Episode 9 “To Live And Die Again” give us Lex Luthor’s (Michael Cudlitz) supersuit, but it also gave us a comics canonical version of Doomsday.
In case you need a a quick recap of how we got here, the villain was initially introduced as a version of Bizarro, the reverse Superman. However, it turns out that he can’t die – and every time Bizarro is killed, he comes back more invulnerable and monstrous than ever before. In the Season 4 premiere, we even got a riff on the classic “Death of Superman” storyline with, uh, Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) dying.
However, the entire time it’s been a TV version of Doomsday… That is, until now. First, Milton Fine (Nikolai Witschl) discovered a file called “Project Doomsday” on John Henry’s (Wolé Parks) stolen supersuit, giving him his name for real. Then Lex visited Doomsday in the mines in Smallville, only to kill him one more time. And despite Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) talking Doomsday down by reminding him of his humanity in an earlier episode, that doesn’t work this time.
When Doomsday emerges, he looks pretty much just like he does in the DC Comics from his first appearance, until recently (he’s currently in DC’s Superman comics). There are exceptions, like a big reverse “S” on his chest. But he’s got the bone beard, and bone spikes, and a serious hankering for killing Superman — again.
In the final act of the episode, Doomsday is unleashed on Smallville, and while Superman battles him in the skies and in the streets, Jon Kent (Michael Bishop) and Jordan Kent (Alex Garfin) keep the people of the town (including Lois) safe. But with Superman now sporting a 60-year-old heart and vastly depowered compared to where he was the first time he fought Doomsday, it certainly looks like it’s curtains for the Man of Steel.
The episode even ends with a battered and bleeding Superman looking at his family. “Dad,” Jon says. “Please.”
“I love all of you,” says Superman, as Doomsday tears him away to kill him.
Spoilers here, but the promo for the series finale clearly shows Superman alive, and bringing the pain to Luthor. Speculation here? But they did mention that all Doomsday wants is to go home to the Bizarro world he came from. If they can figure out a way to get him back there, maybe that dispatches Doomsday without a fight.
Regardless, it’s neat, after several wince-worthy takes at Doomsday on screen, to see one that looks right. Even if it’s only for the end of one episode, and the beginning of the next.
