Diamond Has Announced Free Comic Book Day Gold Sponsors:
After announcing Marvel, IDW, and an Energon Special from Skybound, even more Free Comic Book Day 2025 titles have been announced. Here are some of the highlights, per ICv2.
Archie Comics will release Archie’s Comics Spectacular which focuses on classic Archie tales instead of the more modern books. Speaking of classics, Dynamite’s ThunderCats/Powerpuff Girls looks to include the take on the characters from the classic Marvel ThunderCats book, not the more recent hit series. And not only that, it’s one story, as the Powerpuff Girls travel to Third Earth.
Mad Cave will launch their Speed Racer franchise on Free Comic Book Day with a zero issue. BOOM! Studios has Power Rangers/VR Troopers, spinning out of the recent Power Rangers Prime series. And Image Comics has a brand new I Hate Fairyland story, celebrating 10 years of Skottie Young’s comedy series.
Webtoon Announces $1 Million Webcomics Legends Contest:
Webtoon is giving away $1 million in cash prizes for the next great comic book creator as part of their Webcomic Legends contest. Overall, 40 webcomics will be awards prizes, and the chance to join the Webtoon Originals program.
Launching in March of 2025, the comics can be submitted in English, in four genres: Most Epic, Most Feels, Most Laughs, and Most Gripping. Per PR provided to Comic Book Club, “Entries will be evaluated by a combination of scoring from a panel of expert judges, including WEBTOON’s in-house editorial team and select WEBTOON Originals creators, and audience appeal and engagement.”
One grand prize winner will nab $150,000, three Genre winners will get $100,000 each, 12 Genre Finalists will get $35,000 each, and 24 Genre Runner-Ups will get $5,500 each. They’ll also get the chance to pitch their title to Webtoon Originals.
The Webcomic Legends contest is open to new creators starting March, 2025, and will close in June of 2025. More details will be announced at a later date.
Marvel Announces Rise Of Skywalker Comic Adaptation:
Somehow, The Rise of Skywalker has returned! Back in 2019, Disney and Lucasfilm released Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. And now, five plus years later, Marvel Comics will adapt the movie into a new, five-issue limited series written by Jody Houser with art by Will Sliney — including “all new scenes not in the final film,” per PR from Marvel. Will that include more Reylo kissing? Unknown as of press time.
The book will be releases right around the time Marvel also releases Charles Soule and Luke Ross’s Star Wars: Legacy of Vader, which is set between The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker, and charts Kylo Ren’s rise as Supreme Leader of the First Order.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Adaptation #1 hits stores on February 26, 2025.
