Does ‘The Penguin’ Finale Set Up A Catwoman Spinoff Series?

Cristin Milioti as Sofia Gigante and Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle aka Catwoman

The final episode of The Penguin has arrived. And while we may not see The Penguin Season 2 any time soon — if ever — there is more to come in the Batman Epic Crime Saga. We know for sure there’s The Batman Part II, which will pick up directly after The Penguin season finale. But did the final episode also tease a potential Catwoman spinoff series?

Spoilers past this point, but there’s something the finale set up with Selina Kyle (Zoë Kravitz), though it’s unclear exactly what. In case you missed The Penguin Episode 8 “A Great Or Little Thing,” here’s what went down.

In the finale, Oswald Cobb (Colin Farrell) finally outplayed Sofia Gigante (Cristin Milioti). He killed every member of her gang, convinced the other second-in-commands of the gangs of Gotham City to kill their leaders and take over — ceding control to Oz — and was driving Sofia one last time, seemingly to execute her. Only, that’s not what happens. Oz puts a gun to her head, Sofia is ready to die… And then Oz is gone.

In his place is the Gotham City Police Department, ready to arrest her for blowing up a good chunk of Gotham City… Among other crimes. Some she did commit, most of them were Oz himself. Once again, Sofia has been framed for crimes, just like when her father Carmine Falcone (John Turturro in The Batman, Mark Strong on The Penguin) framed her for the Hangman murders.

And just like when that happened 10 years prior, Sofia is sent back to Arkham. Not only that, but Dr. Julian Rush (Theo Rossi) has gone back to his job at Arkham, and is still doting on her. The final scene with both of them finds Julian bringing Sofia her mail. He notes that most of it is fan mail, or proposals of marriage. Except for one black envelope.

“This one is different,” Julian says. “It’s from Selina Kyle. She says she’s your half-sister.”

Sofia opens the envelope, reads the letter — which we don’t get to see — and smiles.

Will We See Sofia And Selina Team Up In A Spinoff — Or The Batman Part II?

In case you don’t remember the plot of The Batman, Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, is indeed the illegitimate child of Carmine Falcone. Sofia — neé Sofia Falcone — is the legitimate daughter of Carmine Falcone. So yes, they are half-sisters, though Sofia wasn’t mentioned or seen in The Batman.

At the end of The Batman, Selina left Gotham City to go to Blüdhaven, a neighboring city usually most associated with Nightwing in the comic books. So is she still in Blüdhaven? Is she back in Gotham City? We really don’t know for sure. Nor do we know exactly what she wrote to Sofia that made her smile so enigmatically.

There are two ways this can go. One of them is to pick up directly in The Batman Part II. As of now we don’t have official confirmation that Kravitz will be returning for the movie — only Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, along with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, and Farrell as Oswald Cobb are confirmed to return. But it does seem likely that Selina Kyle will show up, either as part of the main cast or in a supporting role.

If this is continued directly there, we could see Selina consulting or talking to Sofia in Arkham, or in some other capacity. But frankly, that doesn’t seem like the most interesting path the series could take.

No, the most interesting path — at least in my opinion — is a Catwoman TV series that delves further into the relationship between Sofia and Selina. Cristin Milioti has clearly become a fan favorite, and Kravitz was well-liked from The Batman. Seeing how these two strangers work together in some capacity — or against each other — could be as intriguing of a villain origin story as The Penguin, and could provide some continuity between the two TV series. It also could work nicely as a bridge between The Batman Part II and a potential The Batman Part III, depending on where Selina shows up.

So will we see this as the “next” Batman Epic Crime Saga TV show? Will the thread be picked up in a movie? Or like so many other comic book teases, will it amount to nothing? Here’s hoping it’s not the latter.
