A brand new, nearly four-minute-long trailer for Marvel‘s Thunderbolts* has dropped online, thanks to the currently running D23 Brazil event. And in it, not only do we get official confirmation about who bought Avengers Tower, but we also find out why the team is called Thunderbolts.
The look opens up with a longer version of the scene glimpsed in the first teaser trailer, with Yelena (Florence Pugh), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), and Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) riding in a broken-down car driven by Red Guardian (David Harbour). They’re being chased by soldiers until enter Bucky (Sebastian Stan), who seems to be on their side… Until he’s not.
There’s also more footage of the team fighting, more of Bob (Lewis Pullman) who is definitely The Sentry — no matter how coy they’re playing it in the footage — and even the reveal that Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) bought Avengers Tower, after the events of Spider-Man: Homecoming.
But the biggest reveal by far is why the team is named the Thunderbolts. Seems the reason is… Red Guardian comes up with it on the spot. And Bucky hates it. And that’s the whole mystery of the asterisk, is they don’t agree on what the team should be named.
Surely there’s more to it, right? Likely they do decide on a name, whether that’s New Avengers or Dark Avengers by the end of the movie, and the asterisk teases that reveal. But as of this special look, at least, it seems like it’s nothing more than Red Guardian being a big, earnest goofball.
Thunderbolts* is directed by Jake Schreier, and hits theaters on May 2, 2025. You can check out the footage, which shows off the action and humor of the movie, below.
