Inkwell Awards Announces 2025 Inking Challenge:
Each year, the Inkwell Awards partner with a comic book artist to honor the life of inker Joe Sinnott. This year, that partner is the legendary Al Milgrom.
As part of the challenge, inkers are given a penciled page by Milgrom — in this case, a cover for The Incredible Hulk — and asked to ink either in the style of Sinnott or in their own style. The artists, who are a mix of professionals and amateurs, have a month to finish the project, which will then be auctioned off in a fundraiser to support the awards and their associated scholarships.
This year’s inkers include names like Scott Koblish, Scott Hanna, Eber Ferreira, and more, including Joe Sinnott’s son Mark, and Mark’s wife, Belinda.
Said Milgrom via a press release provided to Comic Book Club: “I pencilled a fair number of Hulk covers which Joe inked–to excellent results. That’s why I chose to draw our not-so-jolly green giant for this inking challenge. Now get out your pens and brushes fellow ink-slingers and try, just try to compete with the great Joe Sinnott.”

Abrams To Publish Spider-Man Panel By Panel:
Abrams ComicArts is expanding its Panel by Panel line in 2025 with a little guy named Spider-Man.
Per ICv2, the line began in 2021 with a deep dive into Fantastic Four #1, and now continues with this new volume which goes — per the name — panel by panel through Amazing Fantasy #15 and Amazing Spider-Man #1.
The two stories are retold by designer Chip Kidd, who uses vintage copies of the books and 11 pages of original art from Amazing Fantasy that includes margin notes from Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Alongside those pages and text from Kidd, there’s more material from Marvel editor Tom Brevoort, historian Peter Sanderson, and Library of Congress curator Sara Duke.
The 384-page, full-color hardcover will hit stores in June of 2025.
Olivier Coipel Turns 55 Years Old Today:
Happy birthday to legendary comic book artist Olivier Coipel! He turns 55 years old today, so let’s take a moment to pay tribute to him.
Coipel first started as an animator, working on movies like Balto and Prince of Egypt. He then moved over to comics with Legion of Super-Heroes, then signed an exclusive with Marvel in 2005.
It’s at Marvel that Coipel did his most lauded work, including the crossover book House of M, and a run on Thor with J. Michael Straczynski that went on to heavily influence the first MCU Thor movie.
Recently, he’s been sticking to cover art, and his most recent interior work was a digital Infinity comic for Marvel. But fingers crossed we’ll get some more interior work from him at some point in the future. Happy birthday, Oliver Coipel!
