Episode Transcript:
It’s time for an all-spoilers podcast this Wednesday, including big twists for Batman, Ultimates, and Absolute Superman.
This is a spoiler warning for Comic Book Club News for November 6, 2024.
Batman #154 Reveals Thomas Wayne Affair, Jim Gordon Is A Murderer:
In Batman #154, writer Chip Zdarsky is throwing multiple bombs on his way out from the title with two shocking twists. Spoiler warning past this point!
After teasing that someone is claiming to be a secret Wayne sibling — again — Dr. Leslie Thompkins reveals to Bruce Wayne that yes, indeed, Thomas Wayne had an affair back in the day, though no baby came of it. But that’s not even the biggest twist in the issue. While investigating the death of the mayor of Gotham City, the killer is revealed as… Jim Gordon, who pulls a gun on Batman.
With only a few months to go until Zdarsky passes the reins to Jim Lee and Jeph Loeb for Hush 2, what other jaw-droppers does he have up his sleeve? And did Thomas Wayne have a secret son? And why did Gordon murder the mayor? We’ll find out, same bat time, same bat channel. Meaning, next month.
Ultimates #6 Kills Iron Lad:
Ultimates #6 just killed off a major character in a surprise ending nobody saw coming. Spoilers past this point!
In the issue, Iron Lad has finally assembled the whole team to take on Hulk, who himself has the Immortal Weapons at his disposal, and the power of the Iron Fist. And after taking out the entire team and pulverizing She-Hulk’s hand off, the coup de grace is Hulk crushes Iron Lad, in his armor. And while the team is able to escape, Iron Lad is dead at the end of the issue.
What’s perhaps most surprising about this is that Iron Lad appears on covers for the book all the way through February’s issue #9. So will Iron Lad come back? Are there more twists to come? Or is Marvel just that sneaky?
Absolute Superman #1 Teases Kents, Brainiac, Krypton Twist:
Absolute Superman #1 hit stores today, and we knew that it would change Superman’s origin in a big way. But we didn’t know how big. Spoilers past this point!
In the issue, the big cliffhanger is we discover that Kal-El wasn’t a baby when Krypton exploded. Though it’s not entirely clear how old he is, the planet is still around when he’s a little kid, and he’s raised by Jor-El and Lara. But the series also teases that something terrible happened to the Kent family, thanks to their broken down and empty house. And Brainiac may be the villain of the first arc, based on a glimpse of a strange R&D lab filled with people shrunken in bottles.
But the biggest reveal? Lois Lane is working for the bad guys and is the one responsible for capturing Superman.
How much else will be changed in this new take on the Man of Steel? Stay tuned.
