Even with the open-ended cliffhanger of Agatha All Along, it was reasonable to think that the show was done as of Episode 9, “Maiden Mother Crone.” But what this article presupposes is: what if there will be an Agatha All Along Season 2, after all? Particularly given some recent suspicious social media posts, as well as how Disney and Marvel Studios are submitting the show for awards.
Let’s start with the second thing, first. Per Variety, Marvel Television Studios is submitting Agatha All Along in the comedy category — and not limited series — for upcoming awards like Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and Emmy Awards. The key here is that due to the bylaws of these awards shows, a show needs to essentially prove it’s an ongoing series — and not a limited series — to be in the comedy category. On the drama side, a recent example is Shōgun, which was billed as a limited series, then picked up by FX for a season 2 in time to be considered for (and then proceeding to win) the drama categories.
While this isn’t the only concern, a lot of this, I will note, is awards season strategy. For example, it’s arguable that Agatha All Along has a better chance of being nominated in the comedy category, rather than the limited series category, simply because the level of competition in the latter is far higher. Yes, it would be competing against shows like The Bear, Abbott Elementary, and Hacks. But it’s not just about winning; it’s about being in the same conversation.
Full disclosure: I am not an in-the-weeds awards nerd. But I will also note the definition of a limited series is: “The program must tell a complete, non-recurring story and not have an ongoing storyline or main characters in subsequent seasons.” There’s perhaps an argument to be made that Agatha All Along is WandaVision Season 2, which might allow it to compete in the comedy category without a Season 2 of Agatha getting greenlit.
However, not to go all Instagram detective, but there’s another eye-opening bit of info to throw out here. Just yesterday (November 4), the official WandaVision account added three posts with the final shot of Agatha All Along, of Billy Maximoff (Joe Locke) and Ghost Agatha (Kathryn Hahn), and the lines, “One door closes. And another opens,” and “Let’s go find Tommy.” Around the same time, Locke posted the final shot of the season with that “Let’s go find Tommy” phrase on his Instagram stories.
This could be simple promo to keep those 7-day views going on the episodes, and likely that’s all it is. But they’re also likely aware they’re teasing fans in a very specific way. Is this an indicator that Agatha All Along Season 2 is a go? Absolutely not. But it’s possible there are discussions going on, and this sort of social media posting is a trial balloon to see how eager the fans are for a second season.
There’s another aspect to all of this, of course, which is that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is an ongoing machine that, thus far, has not really leaned into second seasons of shows. That’s supposed to be changing as Marvel Television goes over to a more traditional showrunner/pilot/longer season model. But we have yet to see that happen, so TBD.
Will all these clues add up to good news for fans who want to delve deeper into the relationship of Agatha and Rio (Aubrey Plaza), see Billy meet his comics canonical boyfriend Hulking, or any number of other possibilities? Or is it all just awards strategizing and social media posting? Fingers crossed, the former.
