The latest episode of Superman & Lois, “When The Lights Come On,” was another brutal episode of the final season. Spoilers past this point, but after nearly killing Lana Lang (Emmanuelle Chriqui), Lex Luthor (Michael Cudlitz) gets beaten to death by Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin) in the middle of Smallville’s main street. With Lex ending the episode back in Metropolis, there’s only one thing that’s going to level the playing field… Lex’s iconic armored warsuit from the comics.
To take a little step back here, getting almost killed by Superman is Lex’s plan, it seems. After outfitting all of Main Street with red lights courtesy the mysterious scientist Milton (cough, Brainiac, cough), Clark stands outside Lex’s hotel in the rain and demands he come face him. Lex goads Clark enough that they end up having a knock-down, drag-out brawl in the rain, with Clark ultimately coming out on top.
But Luthor gets the last laugh — literally — as he sees Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch), Jordan (Alex Garfin), and Jonathan (Michael Bishop) standing on the sidelines. Luthor taunts Clark that they finally see who he really is, which stops the superhero from choking Lex to death. Instead, he makes an ultimatum. “Leave,” Calrk tells Lex. “And don’t you ever come back.”
Surprise, surprise, Lex does leave Smallville, and whatever his plans were for the town behind — at least for the moment. When we catch up with him in Metropolis, he’s in the iconic “L” shaped LexCorp tower, and putting in his own stitches. Amanda McCoy (Yvonne Chapman) approaches and tells him he can’t do this on his own. She doesn’t mean the stitches, though, she means destroying the Kents. And she’s got an idea of where to start.
“The first thing we need to do is get you a killer suit,” Amanda says as the camera zooms out to reveal that L-tower.
Lex Luthor’s Warsuit On Superman & Lois Seems To Be Stolen From Steel
In the comics, Lex frequently wears a green and purple warsuit to give him the strength and speed he needs to take on Superman. It’s had different iterations, but it usually pops up when Lex has decided his more cerebral plans aren’t working, and it’s time to meet Superman on his own level.
Here’s the thing, though… We’ve already seen Lex’s armored suit on Superman & Lois, or at least one version of it. And it sure looks like he stole it from John Henry Irons (Wolé Parks).
The glimpse comes from a trailer The CW posted pre-Season 4 premiere titled “Superman Is Dead.” It also includes the shocking news that Lex Luthor has shaved his beard, but I digress. In the scene, Lex is back in the Paloma Hotel in Smallville, meaning his exodus to Metropolis is short-lived, and Amanda watches as he dons the suit, and then flies out through the ceiling.
One thing the suit seems to be lacking is the distinct green and purple design from DC Comics. But as noted above, it looks a lot more like the Iron Man-style suit John Henry Irons wears as Steel. There are differences to be sure, so it’s possible Lex built his own suit. But given the similarity, one tends to wonder if Lex stole John’s design — or one of his suits outright.
We’ll likely know more in next week’s episode. Or if not then, very soon, because there are only four episodes left in the series. And Lex, at least, is getting suited up for war.
