Of all the people to get the final word on Agatha All Along, you probably wouldn’t have expected producer Jack Antonoff. But that’s exactly what happens in the series finale, “Maiden, Mother, Crone.” The frequent Taylor Swift collaborator produced the final, pop version of “Ballad of the Witches’ Road” with Japanese Breakfast.
In lieu of a post-credits scene, this is the treat (or trick, depending on how you view it) that awaits you on the closing credits. And while we’ve already been listing every song on the Agatha All Along soundtrack for weeks now, here’s a little more info about the Jack Antonoff track.
In the final episode, along with “Nicky’s Version” (the one sung by Nicholas Scratch) and the “Agatha Through Time Version” (the one sung while following Agatha’s witch-killing montage), you also get the “Pop Version.” Like the others, it’s written and produced by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. As mentioned above, it’s performed by Japanese Breakfast, who appear courtesy Dead Oceans, Inc. And it’s produced by Jack Antonoff.
Interestingly, this version of the song was released two weeks ago. The YouTube version includes a mildly animated video featuring bits from the show.
As for Japanese Breakfast, they’re a band led by Michelle Zauner, who might be even better known for her best-selling memoir Crying in H Mart. That’s currently being adapted into a movie, for which Zauner will provide the soundtrack. Jack Antonoff, meanwhile, is the lead singer of Bleachers, previously of Fun, has worked with everyone from Swift to Sabrina Carpenter and more, but is best known currently for being married to Margaret Qualley. Just kidding. Maybe.
