It’s time to say so long to Agatha All Along, as the two-episode finale streams tonight on Disney+. And there’s a lot that needs to be wrapped up in the final two episodes of the series, not least of which is: will Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) and Rio (Aubrey Plaza) finally kiss???
Okay, I guess there are some other outstanding questions for the series — particularly after the big revelation that Rio is actually Death in last week’s episode. Plus there’s still at least one more trial on the Witches’ Road, a lot of questions about characters like Billy’s (Joe Locke) brother Tommy Maximoff and Agatha’s son Nicholas Scratch.
In fact, without going too insane — after all, we only need to wait until 9 pm ET tonight to find out the answers to these — here are 11 burning questions we have going into the Agatha All Along finale that they must answer or we will watch and enjoy the episodes regardless.
1. How Is Rio Also Death?
This is a big one I’d expect we’ll get answered immediately in Agatha All Along Episode 8. Sure, we know Rio Vidal is the original Green Witch. And according to Agatha, that means she’s also Death. So… Huh? It’s likely that similar to the flashback episode for Billy Maximoff, we’ll get something similar that will not just explain how Rio is Death, and what that means for the series — but also lays out a lot of info about how she met Agatha, and what they mean to each other. It also might reveal a lot about the structure of the series, as we’ve speculated that the prize at the end of the Witches’ Road may be death — not power.
2. Will Agatha And Rio Kiss? Will They Have A Happy Ending?
If Rio and Agatha do not kiss by the end of this series, what in the world did Aubrey Plaza mean by the show being a “gay explosion” by the end of the run? We got Billy making out with his boyfriend, which was very sweet, but more of a gay bang snap than the fireworks we were hoping for. I think it’s likely we will get a kiss, though the circumstances may or may not be in a flashback sequence, and they may or may not be a goodbye kiss.
…That’s because there’s not a very good chance that Rio and Agatha walk into the sunset at the end of the show. Would it be great if they do? Sure. But Agatha the evil witch and the avatar of death don’t seem like a couple destined to hang out on the beach sipping fruity cocktails in the end credits scene. I’d venture it’s likely we will see both of them continue — you can’t destroy Death, and I’m sure the MCU wants more Agatha — but likely not together.
3. Will Billy Find Tommy?
Billy’s professed goal is to find his brother, Tommy Maximoff, who he believes is lost. However, I think his goal became clearer in the previous episode when Lilia Calderu (Patti Lupone) was reading his Tarot… He’s dealing with a crisis of identity. He doesn’t know if he’s William Kaplan, Billy Maximoff, or someone else. I’d venture it’s likely he will settle that at the end of the Witches’ Road, rather than finding a random actor who turns out to be Tommy at the last second.
That said, I think it’s likely that we’ll get some sort of tease of Tommy before all is said and done. Perhaps in a post-credits scene. It might be something that’s picked up in the currently in-development Vision series. Or, the other, popular theory is that Tommy’s soul will somehow end up in poor Ralph Bohner’s (Evan Peters) body, turning him into a super-speedster for real — unlike the joke twist of him not really being Pietro Maximoff in WandaVision.
If that does happen, it could work simply so you don’t have a confusing rando show up at the last second, like how when Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) showed up with his son Skaar (Wil Deusner) in the closing moments of She-Hulk.
4. Will Agatha Get Her Son Nicholas Scratch Back?
Though Agatha’s professed goal on the Witches’ Road is to gain power, it’s pretty clear what she needs is closure to whatever happened with her son, Nicholas Scratch. It’s likely she traded him for the Darkhold, a mystical, powerful tome. But we need confirmation of the exact sequence of events out loud. And if we do, will we see Nicholas Scratch in the “flesh,” versus a vision of a cradle, or a ghostly voice from beyond the grave?
I think there’s a good chance that yes, we will see Nicholas Scratch before all is said and done. But ultimately the bond Agatha has formed with Billy is the one she needs to own in order to get closure. While she may not be able to save her son from Hell, or the afterlife — she can save Billy from, perhaps, Death taking him. If she does that, it provides a redemption arc, and a path forward that’s not as easy as “congrats, your dead son has returned.”
5. How Did Jennifer Get Her Powers Blocked?
One mystery that’s been dangling since the second episode: how did a human doctor block Jennifer Kale’s (Sasheer Zamata) powers? We don’t know much other than in a hallucination he drowned her in water. But who is he? How did he block her powers? And why?
My current pet theory is that it was Rio in another form, for unknown reasons. We’ve seen Rio as Death looming over Lilia’s Maestra. We know she’s connected to Agatha, and clearly Billy as well (based on him avoiding death). I think it’s likely she had something to do with blocking Jennifer, and possibly Alice’s (Ali Ahn) family curse as well (as we don’t know how or why that started, either).
Regardless, I’d guarantee a 100% chance we’ll get an explanation of this one in the final two episodes — whether Rio is behind it, or not… Particularly since Lilia told Jen she is the future and related her to a High priestess card. It’s likely not only does Jen get past her block, she’s leading a coven by the end of the show.
6. What Did Lilia Mean By, “When She Calls You A Coward, Hit The Deck”?
One other thing I’m sure we’ll get closure on: Lilia telling Agatha “When she calls you a coward, hit the deck” last episode. It’s likely she’s talking about Rio, and the implication is Agatha needs to jump out of the way. But Lilia rarely spoke straightforwardly, so there might be more there. Does she mean a Tarot deck? The deck of a ship? And why specifically those words? There’s also something else that’s interesting about this line…
7. Will Alice, Lilia, and Sharon Return To Life?
So, Lilia’s “predictions” all seemed to come from her lifetime, seeing out of order. While there are no hard and fast rules to witchcraft, it seems strange that she would have a specific prediction that likely comes after her death at the end of the last episode. So will Lilia come back to life somehow? And what about Alice, or Sharon Davis (Debra Jo Rupp)?
Again, I think it’s likely that in some fashion the finale will have Death, aka Rio, bring back the deceased characters (I also think Jen will “die” in Episode 8, for what it’s worth), and Agatha will need to make a decision; either for power, or her coven, or for her son or her coven.
While fans have argued that bringing back Lilia would negate her death, if she chooses to stay dead, that would service that plotline, while still allowing her to appear in the finale and see Agatha have to “hit the deck” per above.
8. Will The Scarlet Witch Appear?
It’s looking less and less likely that Elizabeth Olsen will cameo as Scarlet Witch in the finale, isn’t it? While the show starts with Wanda’s dead body and bounces around whether she is really dead or not, it doesn’t seem quite as relevant to the show to see Wanda as it does any of the other characters who have already appeared on screen.
So will Elizabeth Olsen make a cameo? We’ll know more tonight, but this is a BIG question mark until then.
9. Will Mephisto Appear?
After years of dancing around it, Episode 3 of Agatha All Along dropped the name of Marvel’s devil: Mephisto. So will he appear before the finale? Maybe, though having read through multiple interviews with showrunner Jac Schaeffer, it seems like she just does not find the character interesting. She’d rather spend the time on the characters in the series, without a Diaboli Ex Machina. And particularly with Lady Death a crucial part of the show, having both Death and the Devil seems like a little too much. I don’t think we’ll see Mephisto this time around, sorry Fanphistos.
10. Will They Sing “Ballad Of The Witches’ Road” One More Time?
Patti Lupone famously blurted out that Agatha All Along was a musical before the season started.
…Is it though? We’ve gotten a couple of renditions of “Ballad of the Witches Road,” but nothing beyond that. So will we get a musical number? Will Patti Lupone, a lauded Broadway actress get to sing solo finally? I’m going to file this one as a big “probably not,” though if they do a rap version of “Ballad of the Witches’ Road over the end credits, recapping the plot of the show, this might go down as the greatest TV series of all time.
11. Will There Be An Agatha All Along Season 2?
Well?? Will there be? While Marvel hasn’t said one way or another on Agatha All Along Season 2, the answer is: probably not. Other than Daredevil: Born Again and Loki, no Marvel live-action TV shows as of yet have gotten second seasons. And plot-wise, this is the second season of WandaVision, with a third — the untitled Vision series — in the works. So likely we won’t see Agatha All Along Season 2, but we may see these characters down, down the road again eventually.
