31 Days Of Halloween Comics: Hack/Slash

It’s hard to believe that Tim Seeley and Stefano Caselli’s classic horror series Hack/Slash turns 20 this year. And yet, it does, making this Halloween the perfect time to revisit the iconic Image Comics book.

The premise is genius in its simplicity. Cassie Hack is a Final Girl, the lone survivor of the Lunchlady murders. The twist is the Lunchlady was her mother. And there are more slashers out there. And frankly, Cassie isn’t going to take it anymore. Along with her monstrous friend Vlad, she travels America as a killer of slashers, trying to make sure nobody else befalls her fate.

Originally with Devil’s Due, the series started simply and got increasingly emotionally and mythologically complex over time. But it never lost focus on Cassie and Vlad’s relationship, or their trials and growth. It also, by the way, gets very bloody and violent. And is often laugh-out-loud (and morbidly) funny. It’s a smartly written series expertly drawn by Caselli that launched the duo’s careers — and rightfully so.

While it can be daunting to get into a 20-year-old series, if you want to jump right in with the first volume of the Omnibus from Image, that’s a solid place to start. There are also smaller collections, or you can check out the first issue of Hack/Slash: Resurrection for free at Image’s website. That’s volume 4, though, so might be too deep of a dive.

Regardless, if you’re looking for a good bloody time with a final girl who fights back and takes no s**t? Cassie Hack is your girl.

Bonus: I highly recommend checking out Hack/Slash: Back to School by Zoe Thorogood, a spinoff series that requires no previous knowledge of the original series, and sends Cassie to a school for slasher-killers with a unique look and feel that only Thorogood can achieve.
