‘The Penguin’ Episode 6 Brings On The Gangs Of Gotham City For A “Gold Summit”

Colin Farrell The Penguin Episode 6

This week’s episode of The Penguin was a pivotal one, as — spoilers past this point — Oswald Cobb (Colin Farrell) gathered together the gangs of Gotham City to form an alliance he called the “Gold Summit.” Sealed with a beer, the gangs all agreed to take back Gotham from the Maronis and Falcones, essentially placing Oz at the top of the food chain when it comes to Gotham City’s underworld.

But who are these gangs of Gotham? Some we’ve seen before, like The Triads. But others are brand new to the world of The Batman Epic Crime Saga. Given they’ll clearly be important going forward into the final two episodes of the season, let’s break down what we know about them from the show, as well as any of their members and if they have an origin in DC Comics.

The Triads

Robert Lee Leng The Penguin Episode 3

We’ve met The Triads already, a gang from Chinatown in Gotham, led by Feng Zhao (François Chau) alongside his number two, Link Tsai (Robert Lee Leng). They seemed to want to help — or at least were interested in helping – Oz and Sofia (Cristin Milioti) get their Bliss business off the ground, though broke with them once Oz’s general betrayal came to light. Because of this, they’re the last to agree to the alliance at the Gold Summit… But they do agree, perhaps to not be the odd man out.

In DC Comics, The Triads have been a catch-all for Chinese gangs, ranging from those with superpowers to those without. In the early twentieth century, they were called the Neon Dragon Triad; more recently in the comics they were called the Lucky Hand Triad.

The Odessa Mob

A Ukranian gang including Fedor Laskin (David Grabowski-Clark) and Vasily Kosov (David Vadim), the Odessa Mob was first introduced in DC Comics in Detective Comics #742 in 2000. Koslov is the leader of the gang, and they have appeared numerous times since then — often with a Koslov in charge if one of the other ones has died in the intervening time.

Of note, they were introduced right after the “No Man’s Land” storyline, which found Gotham cut off from the rest of the world after an Earthquake. While not a one-to-one, Crown Point has been referred to as a “no man’s land” earlier in The Penguin, and we’re meeting The Odessas now, so there you go.

The LoBoys (AKA The Low Boyz)

The LoBoys on The Penguin Episode 6 Gold Summit

Also sometimes called The Lo Boyz (or at least, that’s what they were called on FOX’s Gotham), this is another gang that was introduced in the “No Man’s Land” storyline. Billie Peña (Adrienne Acevedo Lovette) is the leader of the gang, and I think the twist here is that they are an all-female gang, so the name is ironic. You get it.

The Sullivan Crime Family

The Sullivans are the Irish crime family in Gotham, including Donny Boy (Johnny Hopkins). The name at least comes straight from Batman: The Long Halloween #2, the book by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale that inspired a lot of The Batman and The Penguin. However, in the book, they’re Irish hitmen, working for Carmine Falcone. They also only appear briefly… After unsuccessfully trying to kill Harvey Dent, they’re all shot to death by the Holiday Killer.

Donald “Donny Boy” Sullivan does appear in the group in the comics, and other members are Mickey “The Mink” Sullivan, Jimmy “Slick” Murphy, “Dapper Kevin” Kelly, and Willie “Two-Times O’Neil.

The Crowns, AKA Burnley Town Massive

Able Crown (Leon Addison Brown) and Charles Crown (Micah Peoples) are the representatives of The Crowns, which is called Burnley Town Massive (or BTM) in the comics. The primarily African American gang was introduced in Detective Comics #744 during the gang war storyline “War Games,” though they were all wiped out very quickly.

In fact, given all of these gangs of Gotham City are wiped out quickly in the comics… Uh, maybe they’re not long for the world on the show, either.
