Is DC’s Peacemaker comic in DCU continuity?

This is the 300th episode of Comic Book Club News for October 25, 2024.

Kylo Ren Returns In Legacy Of Vader Comic From Marvel:

Somehow, Kylo Ren has returned. Though actually, we know how: in a new comic book from Marvel titled Legacy of Vader.

Per StarWars.com, the new series is set between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, and focuses on Ben Solo’s time as the Supreme Leader of The First Order. The book will be written by Charles Soule, with art by Luke Ross, and brings Kylo Ren back to Vader’s fortress on Mustafar for unknown reasons.

Said Soule, “Kylo is truly lost at this particular moment. In a very short span of time, he’s faced two of his most significant mentors in combat (one of whom is his uncle), killed his own father, almost killed his mother, stolen control of a galaxy-level military that he has no idea how he’ll use, and of course, found a deep connection with another Force-user named Rey. All of that is swirling around in his emotional matrix, making him deeply unstable, angry, frustrated… dangerous. He’s looking for any form of guidance he can get — even if he won’t admit it — and so he turns to just about the only thing he’s got left, the legacy of his grandfather, the Sith Lord Darth Vader.”

The new series hits stores on February 5, 2025.

Rob Liefeld Turned Down Survivor And Amazing Race:

Don’t expect Rob Liefeld to pop up on your favorite reality show: turns out, he turned down the opportunity to appear on two of them, back in the day.

Per The Beat, after posting his general displeasure with Dancing with the Stars as a concept on X (formerly Twitter), a fan jokingly told him that the show would get him eventually. But treating the joke seriously, said Liefeld, “Trust me, I turned down Survivor, they contacted me in 2011, and Amazing Race, 2012, same circumstances. Never happening.”

While one might point out that it would be fun to see Liefeld do the “Bye Bye Bye” dance on Dancing with the Stars, the prolific creator has actually eschewed most on-screen appearances. He made a cameo in the original Deadpool movie and has appeared in a number of Image Comics documentaries. But other than frequent online interviews and his podcast, he’s mostly stuck to writing and drawing.

But the real reason Liefeld won’t appear on Dancing with the Stars? He has no feet.

Is DC’s Peacemaker Comic In DCU Continuity?:

At New York Comic Con, DC announced Peacemaker Presents: The Vigilante/Eagly Double Feature, a new comic picking up where Max’s Peacemaker Season 1 left off — and boasting DCU head James Gunn as a story consultant. So the implication is they’re in continuity with the movies and TV shows of the DCU, right?

Well… No. Maybe. On Threads, James Gunn posted — then deleted — an announcement of the series. When questioned by a fan, Gunn said, “Yeah that was me, sorry. I deleted the post from Threads and changed the text in IG. Someone posted the announcement for me yesterday while I was doing press for CC and it was intimated the books were in DCU continuity. They are amazing and fun books by wonderfully talented folks – but they’re not in DCU continuity. Sorry!”

When questioned further, Gunn added, “No I am a story consultant – I just can’t oromise everything that happens is in strict DCU continuity.”

On the other hand, I’ll note that Comic Book Club sat down with writer Tim Seeley, who teased that while the miniseries wouldn’t walk right up to Season 2 of Peacemaker, it will connect in certain ways. So to crib from Oprah: what is the truth?

My best guess here is that yes, the comics are in continuity… Until they’re not. Like a lot of ancillary material, the TV show/movie arm doesn’t feel beholden to what happens in the comics or books. If it ends up contradicting things, what happens in the TV shows and movies takes precedence. So Gunn is taking preemptive steps to say that fans shouldn’t lambast him at cons for something that happened in issue three of a DC comic book. But hey, you can do it anyway.

For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And this podcast also is not in DCU continuity.
