‘Agatha All Along’ Isn’t The First Witch Show To Use “Time In A Bottle”

Lilia Calderu Agatha All Along Episode 7

Music is a key part of Agatha All Along. And while we’re maybe not getting quite as many musical numbers as Patti Lupone promised before the show premiered, we’ve gotten enough that every week we’ve been listing every song on Agatha All Along so far. This week’s episode, “Death’s Hand In Mine,” only has one new sound on the soundtrack, though: “Time In A Bottle,” by Jim Croce. And the funny thing is, this isn’t the first time a show about witches has used the classic song.

In this week’s episode, and spoilers past this point, we see how Lilia Calderu (Lupone) has been living her life out of order. The conclusion of the episode where Lilia dies seems to drive home the point that her end is also her beginning… After all, in the moment of her death, we see Young Lilia (Chloe Camp) back at a divination lesson and her Maestra (Laura Boccaletti) says, “Let us begin.”

Over the end credits, the episode plays “Time In A Bottle” which has pretty much perfect lyrics for the episode, talking about “If I could save time in a bottle,” and “If I could make days last forever.” Lilia thought she was running out of time, but all she had was time.

It’s neat, but as I mentioned, another witchy show used “Time in a Bottle” for a crucial scene.

A Discovery Of Witches Did “Time In A Bottle” First

All apologies to Agatha All Along, but A Discovery Of Witches got there, first. They used “Time In A Bottle” in Season 2, Episode 6 for a pretty key sequence where the two main characters get married. There was another version of the song that also played over the end credits, but that’s not available online, as far as I can tell. The song was adapted by series composer Rob Lane, and performed by Julia Church, based on the song by Jim Croce.

Look, is there more than enough room to use the same song on two witch shows? For sure. But if I had a nickel, etc, etc, you know the meme.

“Time In A Bottle” By Jim Croce Lyrics And Origin

Making the song choice for Agatha all the more haunting, Croce wrote this after finding out his wife was pregnant in 1970. It was released — and became a hit — in 1972. In 1973, Croce died in a plane crash. So yeah, a prescient song there, unfortunately, and one that dovetails with the fictional long — yet compressed — life of Lilia Calderu.

Here are the lyrics to “Time In A Bottle” by Jim Croce, via Genius (which also has great notes on songs that delve into their origins, so go check ’em out there).

If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I’d like to do
Is to save every day
‘Til eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you

If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
I’d save every day like a treasure and then
Again, I would spend them with you

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
I’ve looked around enough to know
That you’re the one I want to go
Through time with

If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true
The box would be empty
Except for the memory
Of how they were answered by you

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
I’ve looked around enough to know
That you’re the one I want to go
Through time with
