While Disney and Marvel Studios are still being pretty stingy with the official press photos for new Agatha All Along episodes, there’s a lot we can get from the Episode 7 stills that just dropped in what promises to be a wild, Lilia Calderu (Patti Lupone) centered episode.
Let’s start with the less interesting ones, first. As we left them in the previous episode, Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) and Billy Maximoff (Joe Locke) — who is still officially credited as “Teen” on the press stills — are traveling to the next trial on the Witches’ Road.
Presumably, this is to preserve the surprise that — spoilers, I guess — the rest of the coven is coming back in this episode. Or at least, Jennifer Kale (Sasheer Zamata) and Lilia Calderu (Patti Lupone) escape the mud Billy left them to die in. We know this because… Well, check out this other still:
Yep, that’s Agatha as the Wicked Witch of the West, likely transformed by the next trial we see in the castle in the distance in the still above. Looking closer, though, you can see a stone table with the words “Your Path Winds Out Of Time” on it. And looking even closer, you can see that there are spaces for cards on the table.
So yes, this is Lilia’s trial. The character has been, well, winding out of time all season long as she has glimpses of the future, past, and what have you. The trial is likely about history itself, which is why Agatha is the iconic Wicked Witch from The Wizard of Oz. And not only that, Lilia becomes Glinda the Good Witch, while Billy is dressed like Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, and Jennifer is the Evil Queen from Snow White as an old woman. This was all confirmed thanks to EW, which posted a few extra stills.
Agatha and Lilia’s costumes, as two opposite ends of the spectrum, make a lot of sense. So does Jennifer… The Evil Queen is obsessed with beauty, and so is Jennifer. Billy as Maleficent is intriguing though… Perhaps because he flirts with being bad, but is misunderstood? I guess we’ll see.
The other aspect here with the table is, through other footage, we’ve seen there will be a Tarot reading — a deadly one. That’s what Lilia does, and we’ll almost definitely hear where things like “The Tower Reversed” come, in the right order. And in fact, Lupone teased as much in the EW interview.
“Jac is so clever in how she can lay in the puzzle and then resolve it,” LuPone said. “I didn’t connect the dots when I first read all of the episodes. In 7, as Lilia’s powers are awakening, she’s tying up all of these events that we’ve seen in the previous episodes. There’s an explanation to it.”
Oh, and one more prediction for the episode, based on that quote… After this, we’re two episodes from the end. Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza) seems to be missing. And one of the major cards we have yet to see in play is — spoilers past this point — Death. Can a reveal of Rio’s true nature be far behind? I’m guessing this episode will end with a full reveal, leading into flashbacks next episode. After this, all the cards will be on the table.
