The Walking Dead, since the very beginning, has been based on the idea that anyone can die at any moment. That’s a tough thing to pay off, on a show like The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, though, where you’re probably not going to kill the title character, Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus). Nor are you going to kill off Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride), particularly just after she reunites with Daryl. But the latest episode of the series is an absolute bloodbath anyway, killing off a slew of characters.
In fact, they killed off at least two of the main cast of the series, left one in mortal danger (there’s reason to expect he’s fine), and then murdered an old lady for good measure. Oh, plus all the soldiers and others who died during Marion Genet’s (Anne Charrier) attack on the Nest in this episode.
With that in mind, here’s how all of the major deaths went down. And as you might imagine, spoilers for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, Season 2, Episode 4 – “The Book of Carol: La Paradis Pour Toi” past this point.
Death #1: Isabelle Carriere (Clémence Poésy)
As we correctly predicted last week, Isabelle died in this week’s episode. After siding with Daryl and betraying the Union de L’Espoir by not agreeing to let Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi) be bitten by a zombie, Losang (Joel de la Fuente), the leader of the Union, stabbed her in the gut. Isabelle managed to hobble outside, only to bump into Carol. Despite the two not knowing each other — and Carol not knowing that Isabelle is a Daryl-smoocher — Carol gives her a very rough bandage and helps her lie down.
Carol then goes to get Daryl, but by the time they return, Isabelle is extremely pale and near death. Daryl gets to say goodbye to her, and then she dies, calling back to a previous conversation the duo had.
“I can see them,” Isabelle says. “The fireflies. They’re so beautiful.” Presumably, they then stabbed her in the head so she wouldn’t turn, but we don’t get to see that.
Death #2: Marion Genet (Anne Charrier)
The more shocking death, in my opinion, is Marion Genet. After revealing Genet’s origin story, it seemed like the show was positioning her as the new Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). There was even a world where Genet pursued Daryl and Carol into Spain in the next season. But nope! She dead.
Carol and Daryl, pretending to be Isabelle and Daryl (yes, Daryl is just pretending to be Daryl, go with it), encounter an old, friendly couple. Didi (Marie-Christine Adam) and Theo (François-Éric Gendron) seem like your regular, kindly couple. And Didi is. Theo, however, gets scared when he realizes Genet’s organization, Pouvoir des Vivants, is after them. He gives up their location, but Daryl and Carol quickly turn the tables on Genet. The killing blow is a dose of the super-zombie serum Genet has developed, which Carol shoots Genet with right in the part of your back where you get an itch, but can’t reach to scratch it. You know the one.
Genet then proceeds to scream in horror as her flesh is covered with black veins, boils explode on her face, and she dies horribly. And the outcome is that Losang (Joel de la Fuente) becomes the leader of the united Union and Pouvoir forces. Their mission? Bite Laurent. Or, I guess have a zombie bite Laurent. Anyway, that’s a wrap on the new Negan! I really went over the top calling that one, I guess.
Death #3: Didi (Marie-Christine Adam)
Theo’s whole goal was to keep his lover Didi safe from Genet’s forces. Unfortunately, Didi knows something about collaborators in France — i.e., what happened with the Nazis in World War II. She dies standing up to Genet, shot multiple times, and Theo is left alone to deal with his actions. Sad!
Death #4: Stéphane Codron (Romain Levi)
Probably should have put “death” in quotes here. Codron is first seen in this episode tied to the front of a dune buggy, Mad Max-style. he’s down one eye, and freaking out because he’s supposed to lead the super-zombies Genet has created into Mont-Saint-Michel. And he does, but Carol frees him so he can try to hold his own. We last see him from a distance as all the zombies convene on his location, with the implication that he died overrun by super-zombies — but died standing on his own two feet.
But come on, we’ve all been watching The Walking Dead long enough: bodies or it didn’t happen. There’s a 100% chance Codron is coming back before the end of the season. He’s still got some bouef to settle with Daryl.
