Home Sick Pilots is easily one of the most unique comic books you’ll ever read. It’s also, thanks to the writing from Dan Watters and art by Caspar Wjingard, one of the more stunning books you’ll read, as well, full of spooky ghosts, big action, and some real emotional punches in the gut.
In fact, the concept of the Image Comics book sounds like I’m making it up: indie bands pilot haunted houses powered by ghosts, and end up in what is essentially the ultimate undead battle of the bands. Or as Image puts it, “Power Rangers meets The Shining (yes really).”
As wild as that sounds, Watters and Wjingard never forget the characters at the center, the bands, and the friends who keep these kaiju-sized ghost houses battling. The story, like the houses, grows exponentially, too, unafraid of changing the world the comic exists in entirely.
But since it’s Halloween month, you’re probably wondering about scares in a book that seems like a goofy good time. And mind you, it’s not afraid of the goofy weirdness of the concept. But it also doesn’t shy away from some ghosts so terrifying they would make Mike Flanagan sob, cry, and give up on horror forever. Credit Wjingard’s jaw-dropping art and character designs for that one.
The book was collected in three volumes, but if you want to try before you buy, Image has the first issue free online. But like the best comics, read one issue and you’ll find Home Sick Pilots haunting your dreams.
It’s spooky season, and you know what that means: time to curl up with a comic book or graphic novel that will scare your socks off. With that in mind, we’re posting a new horror book to check out every day of October, for our 31 Days Of Halloween Comics. Awoooo! Looking for the rest of our picks? Check them out on the Halloween tag.
