‘Venom: The Last Dance’s Tom Hardy: “I Would Love To Fight Spider-Man”

Venom the Last Dance

Venom: The Last Dance is ready to goop into theaters next weekend. And in advance of the debut of the third — and final — Venom movie (maybe), the cast and crew hit up New York Comic Con to tease what to expect from the Sony film. With that in mind, here’s everything we learned from Sony’s Venom: The Last Dance NYCC 2024 panel.

The panel kicked off welcoming Tom Hardy (Eddie Brock/Venom), Juno Temple, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and writer/director Kelly Marcel.

“Well, I come up with these fantastic ideas,” Hardy joked on his inspiration. “I’ll talk at Kelly. And I’ll keep talking until Kelly says that’s enough… And then Kelly comes back with things I never thought. And it’s all formatted perfectly. And I pat myself on the back.”

Clarified Marcel, “there are also pictures.”

“I’m a face-puller, so it’s not hard to show up and pull faces,” said Hardy. “But storytelling is important part… When you have an IP or character as wonderful and as deliciously wicked as Venom… The opportunity you have as actor,” explained Hardy, is that you can really dig in and expand what you’re doing. He also shouted out comic book creators Todd McFarlane, Donny Cates, and Ryan Stegman.

Digging more into the movie, Marcel said that, “The Last Dance is kind of a road trip movie as they’re chased by people from our world, and people from another world.” However, the longer Venom and Eddie are together the more they realize their relationship is putting the world in jeopardy.

Moving to Ejiofor and Temple, the latter teased that as they chase Eddie and Venom, “We work together, but we don’t agree on the approach.” Notably, both Hardy and Temple were in Dark Knight Rises together, but never in the same scene. So when moderator Josh Horowitz noted this was a reunion, Hardy shot back he was confused, and then in a Bane voice said, “Who’s here? You are.”

More of note, Marcel is directing this movie, a rarity for a female director. “Obviously it means a lot to me, I’ve been with Tom on this journey for seven years,” Marcel said. “I was really grateful to Sony for letting me see this one to the end… I really hope it opens more doors for female directors, directing more male-led action movies.”

Moving on to whether this is, indeed the “last dance,” Marcel confirmed this is the final outing for Hardy and Venom.

“This is the last Venom movie, we always saw this as three pictures,” Marcel said. “But as you know there are lots of symbiote stories in the canon, and there may even be Easter eggs in here that start that journey.”

So, what about Spider-Man then? Said Marcel, “I would love to see Venom and Spider-Man, but who knows?” And then immediately, Hardy quipped, “I would love to fight Spider-Man. I would love to fight him now.” More seriously, he added, “I would never say never on this, but we specifically set up to bring Venom and The Last Dance is the final piece in that trilogy.”

And there’s one more dangling piece: Knull, god of the symbiotes. “Knull, this is just the introduction to Knull, you could never do one and done with him,” Marcel said. “You’ll get to meet him, and what the future holds, who knows?”

The panel ended with footage of the Venom Horse scene (which is great) leading into a bunch of mercs hunting Venom and Eddie in a river (which ruled) and the entire time Venom hopping to a fish, then a frog, and then back to Eddie… Before another massive alien shows up and eats all the soldiers.

Venom: The Last Dance hits theaters on October 25, 2024.
