Of all the characters we were expecting to return from WandaVision on Agatha All Along… Well, this is probably never one we would have guessed. But — and spoilers past this point — for this week’s episode, “Familiar By Thy Side,” Ralph Bohner, played by Evan Peters returned for a surprise cameo.
In case you forgot, Evan Peters popped up in Westview on WandaVision pretending to be Pietro Maximoff, a role he played in several X-Men movies. The twist there was that in the MCU, Aaron Taylor-Johnson played Pietro, Wanda Maximoff’s (Elizabeth Olsen) brother. So like everything else on that series, they were doing a riff on a classic sitcom recasting. However, Peters wasn’t playing Pietro at all… He was Ralph Bohner, a local actor who was sort of working with and sort of held prisoner by Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn).
The last we saw of Bohner, he was escaping custody by cutting off an ankle monitor and making a run for it… Until now.
In this week’s Agatha All Along, we flash back in time to see how the character formerly known as Teen, played by Joe Locke, is actually Billy Maximoff. Turns out as Wanda’s hex fell, the soul of Billy went in the body of a teen named William Kaplan, who died at the same time. But Billy doesn’t really remember anything before the accident and is slowly trying to piece together what happened in Westview, as the world at large doesn’t know the truth.
He stumbles on a Westview truther, who meets Billy and his boyfriend Eddie (Miles Gutierrez-Riley) in a parking structure, Deep Throat style (the Watergate informant, not the other thing). That truther? None other than Ralph Bohner, who is not doing great, to be honest. He’s got a scraggly beard, long coat, big hat, and is completely freaked out.
“I remember everything,” Ralph tells the teens. “Wanda had the whole town acting out this weird, sad sitcom plot.”
He proceeds to tell them the whole truth about Westview — at least his version of it — including how Wanda kept everyone trapped there, and Agatha kept him trapped as well, as her “puppet.” And not only that, he drops the info that Wanda and Vision (Paul Bettany) had two kids “a little speedster and his mind-reading brother.” That’s when it starts to come together for Billy, as he’s been mind-reading for the past three years.
The last bit of info Ralph drops in their laps? That Agatha is still in Westview, and still under Agatha’s spell. And in exchange for the info, he asks for a very specific payment. “I’ll give you half-off tickets to my one-man show in Paramus,” Ralph says. “I really need to fill seats.”
…And that’s probably a series wrap on Ralph Bohner. Again. Here’s hoping he makes it a hat trick, somehow showing up in the upcoming Vision TV series.
Oh, one last little note: when we loop back to Agatha in the true-crime fugue state she was in, in the premiere, she’s still living in Ralph Bohner’s house, and wearing his clothes. That includes a shirt that says, “Bohner Family Reunion; Pitch a Tent.”
Disney, you know what to do: put these on sale tomorrow. Thanks.
