31 Days Of Halloween Comics: All Eight Eyes

all eight eyes #4 cover crop

If you hate spiders, boy have I not got the comic for you! Written by Steve Foxe with art by Piotr Kowalski, All Eight Eyes posits: what if there was an invasion of giant spiders in New York City, right under our noses? And what if they wanted to eat us?

If you’ve already huddled under your bedsheets in fear: my apologies. Everyone else: welcome to your next favorite comic. The four-issue Dark Horse Comics series takes place 20ish years ago in New York City still in the shadow of 9/11. And when an aimless loser named Vin is, well, aimlessly being a loser one night, he happens to stumble into the middle of a drifter’s non-stop war against the giant spiders lurking in the sewers — and in the alleys. And perhaps other places, as well.

While the comic eventually (and appropriately) spirals out of control, the first few issues channel the dark humor of classics like Arachnophobia, mixed with the dread of movies like The Thing. In fact, given the big action sequences throughout — there’s plenty of spider fighting — this feels a bit like a lost John Carpenter movie, brought to the comic book page.

And not enough can be said about Piotr Kowalski’s art. He’s become a bit of a horror maven, thanks to books like Where Monsters Lie, and the upcoming Let This One Be a Devil. If you ever thought “Kowalski would draw some terrifying giant spiders…” Well, you’d be right.

Dark Horse has the whole thing collected as a trade, so make sure to pick it up. And never, ever walk the streets of New York alone.
