James Gunn Shows Off First Look At Krypto The Superdog In ‘Superman’

Krypto The Superdog Superman movie

You will believe a dog can fly. In the 2025 debuting Superman movie, written and directed by James Gunn, Krypto the Superdog officially arrives. And in honor of Adopt a Shelter Month, Gunn has revealed the first look at the Pup of Steel… As well as his heartwarming origin story.

Gunn posted the news on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Krypto arrives on screens in Superman this summer,” along with a motion graphic of Superman (David Corenswet), his back to the camera, Krypto sitting next to him as they look at the Earth from what is likely a crater on the moon. While it’s plausible this could be a scene in the movie, it’s more likely a promo shot to introduce Krypto to the world at large.

Gunn continued, explaining that originally Superman wasn’t supposed to include Krypto… But adopting his own dog changed not just his life, but the direction of the story.

“Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman,” Gunn wrote. “Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him. I remember thinking, ‘Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ – and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life. What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than #AdoptAShelterDog month.  Btw, Ozu today, is, fairly often, a very good boy.”

Krypto was, relatively speaking, a late addition to the Superman mythos. He first popped up in 1955’s Adventure Comics #210, by Otto Binder and Curt Swan. While Krypto was originally intended to be a one-off character, he so enchanted the audience he stuck around for decades in the comics. And Krypto has also appeared in nearly every animated iteration of Superman, as well as anchoring his own film — The DC League of Super-Pets.

Superman will premiere in theaters on July 11, 2025.
