If you’re looking for a little gothic romance with your horror, look no further than Image Comics‘s The Me You Love In The Dark. Written by Skottie Young with art by Jorge Corona, the disturbing haunted house series is the perfect thing to put you off love, maybe forever.
When an artist named Ro moves to a decrepit old house, she’s hoping the change of scenery will break through her creative block. Instead, she finds a muse in the dark who may be a spirit, may be part of her insanity, or perhaps something far worse. As they strike up a flirtation that, per the title, turns very dark, it’ll make you question everything that’s happening until the very end.
For Young, he’s been on a tear the pat few years, breaking away from his rep as “Guy who draws cute stuff” to explore more deep ideas about the human condition. Here, he expertly mixes the terror of procrastination (seriously) with the longing we all have for someone to understand us… Even if that someone is a shadow who might be trying to eat us.
And Corona’s art is just stunning throughout, playing with deep tones of black throughout the book that go beyond mere ink-blot shadows into something that will make you comb through pages like you’re searching for secret ghosts in a Mike Flanagan series.
All issues have been collected as a trade by Image, and it’s well worth picking up. If you’re a fan of dark, gothic romance tales, or just great-looking spooky comics, you’ll love The Me You Love In the Dark.
It’s spooky season, and you know what that means: time to curl up with a comic book or graphic novel that will scare your socks off.
