Marvel Officially Reveals Joe Locke Is Billy Maximoff — And His Tragic Backstory

Just in case there was any doubt in your mind about the true identity of Joe Locke’s Teen on Agatha All Along? Yeah, he’s Billy Maximoff, as officially revealed in Marvel’s midseason trailer for the Disney+ series.

“What does Billy Maximoff want at the end of the road?” asks Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) right at the top of the trailer. While Episode 5, “Darkest Hour, Wake Thy Power” left off on the reveal that Teen is the son of the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), this look at the final four episodes of the season leaves no question about who he is: he’s Billy, who was previously played by Jullian Hilliard on WandaVision and in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

So how does the straight brown-haired 10-year-old played by Hilliard turn into the curly, dark-haired teen played by Joe Locke? While not every secret is revealed in the trailer, we do get a lot of clues. “Power doesn’t interest me,” Billy says. “I want something else.”

This is over some curious shots of him playing with some stones, and then a montage of scenes from earlier episodes. However, the biggest clue is what comes next. First, there’s a shot of Locke’s character (more on why I’m being vague and not calling him Billy here in a second) in the back of a car:

Then we see what he’s looking at… It’s Wanda’s hex forming over the town of Westview, which kicked off the events of WandaVision:

Hex Westview

Clearly distracted by this massive power bubble forming over the town (they’re headed to Eastview, the neighboring town), they nearly collide with a truck coming in the other direction. Locke screams, “Mom!” and then the car crashes into a tree.

So yeah, while we don’t have all the info here, it dovetails nicely with a theory that’s been going since the season started… That the way of getting around Billy Maximoff’s soul taking over another person’s body, an ethically dicey prospect, he took over a dead body, instead. In this case, Billy Kaplan, a resident of Eastview who died in a car crash related to the formation of Wanda’s hex. And then Billy Maximoff ended up in the body of Billy Kaplan. Which is why he looks different, and how he’s back at all after Wanda let his spirit go in the WandaVision finale.

There’s a lot more in the trailer, including Agatha’s origin story, teases for future episodes (including a Disney cameo that’s been teased since the end credits hit in the premiere. You can watch it below… But now we know: Joe Locke is Billy Maximoff. How, we’ll find out the exact circumstances later this week.
