First, there was Oni Press and EC Comics’s Cruel Universe, a sci-fi anthology. Now, there’s Cruel Kingdom #1, a dark fantasy anthology spinning off for four issues. And we’ve got the full rundown of the creative team for the first issue, here.
Cruel Kingdom #1 will feature writers Al Ewing, Chris Condon, and Greg Pak, paired with artists Kano, Leomacs, and Charlie Adlard.
“From our very earliest conversations, a central part of our far-reaching plan for the resurrection of EC Comics has been to expand into genres that were only rarely glimpsed – or never fully attempted – in the company’s original library of all-time classic titles. Number-one on that hit list was always ‘dark fantasy’ – and now, for the first time, we’re elated to present all-new tales of the age of knights and dragons that positively pulsate with the same joyously deranged EC energy that has fueled EPITAPHS FROM THE ABYSS and CRUEL UNIVERSE into becoming two of biggest hit series anywhere in comics today,” said Oni Press President & Publisher Hunter Gorinson via a press release provided to Comic Book Club. “And it’s far from the last of the surprises that you can expect from EC Comics in the year ahead…”
The first issue will run 40 pages, and feature covers from Adam Pollina, Liam Sharp, Jay Stephens, and Rian Hughes. There will also be an “all-new, forbidden 1:100 variant by Tom Fowler.” But it’s forbidden, so you can’t see it yet.
Cruel Kingdom #1 hits comic book shops on January 8. Check out the covers below (except the forbidden one), and click for larger versions.
