Mad Cave Studios Turning ‘Weekly World News’ Into A Comic, And The Comic Book Into A TV Show

Weekly World News crop

The Weekly World News is one of the most notorious tabloids of all time, featuring outrageous headlines about Bigfoot, alien zoo animals, UFOs, and so much more. And now, Mad Cave Studios is turning it into a comic book. And that comic book is being developed as a TV show. Presumably, that TV show will be turned into a newspaper, but we might be jumping the gun on that one.

The book is being written by two vets from Marvel Studios’ Echo, Steven Paul Judd and Ken Kristensen, as well as feature film writer Tvli Jacob. They’ll be joined by Air and Cairo comic book vet M.K. Perker on the comic book, while also working on the TV series based on the comic book.

“We have found the perfect comic book home for The World’s Only Reliable News,” said Greg D’Alessandro, chief creative officer for Weekly World News via a press release provided to Comic Book Club. “This brilliant, uber-talented team of creators combined with the amazing Mad Cave Studios, makes this a match made in heaven. BigFoot, Bat Boy, Ph.D. Ape – are all jumping for joy! They can’t wait to see our most outrageous and entertaining stories come to life in full color.”

…So how does a comic book based on a tabloid work? Is it like Just Shoot Me? Does anyone get that reference? No? Anyway, it follows a Weekly World News journalist and photojournalist as they investigate stories “inspired by actual articles published in the paper over the decades. As funny as it is thrilling, the characters’ search for the truth leads them to uncover bizarre mutants, unexplained phenomena, epic world secrets, and supernatural realities. The drama of their weird and wild encounters are only rivaled by the eccentric personal relationships at the office and their volatile family dynamics at home.”

Okay, so it is like Just Shoot Me, but with Bigfoot instead of David Spade. Got it.

“We are thrilled to team up with Steven, Ken, Tvli, and M.K. on the Weekly World News comic book series,” said Mark Irwin, president of Mad Cave Studios. “With a distinguished body of work between them on such projects as Echo, The Punisher, Happy!, The Continental, and Dark Winds, you just know that they’ll deliver a tale that’s delightfully weird, full of cryptids and conspiracies, but built around a profound emotional core. We can’t wait to see what magnificent madness they’ll cook up!”

You can check out the cover below, but you will never believe the shocking truths inside! Or maybe you will. No debut date has been announced yet, but presumably the comic will be released before the world ends on New Year’s Eve, 1999.
