31 Days Of Halloween Comics: iZombie

If you’re only familiar with iZombie through the (excellent) TV series that ran for several seasons on The CW… Well, get ready for something completely different. Other than one small part of the idea, DC Comics/Vertigo’s iZombie is inherently different from the TV show, though just as delightful.

Created by Chris Roberson and Michael Allred, iZombie focuses on Gwen, a gravedigger who must eat brains once a month or she turns into a full-on zombie. Once she eats the brains, she gets the memories and experiences of the person whose grey matter she consumed… And that’s pretty much where any similarities with the TV show end.

Instead of a supernatural procedural, the comic iZombie has a lot more on its mind about a sense of self and soul, as well as throwing a ton more supernatural entities in the mix — particularly werewolves and ghosts. It’s also very funny and features the always ginchy art of Allred. Plus if you want an Oregon travelogue, the series visits real locations throughout Eugene and environs over the course of the issues.

iZombie ran for 28 issues, and though it’s categorized as horror, it’s not particularly scary; there are just zombies, werewolves, and others, so perfect for those who are too squeamish for a slasher comic. It’s also not as extreme as, say, The Walking Dead, if you’re worried about the zombie element.

The series was collected in four volumes, with the first including a prelude story from House of Mystery. Or if you want to jump right in, there’s also an omnibus collection. I recommend just diving right in with that, because if you only get the first volume, you’ll definitely be hungry for more.
