This is Comic Book Club News for October 10, 2024.
Ultimate Spider-Man Takes Top Slot On September Sales Charts:
Ultimate Spider-Man took the top slot in September’s graphic novel sales charts for the first volume collecting the series, proving Marvel’s Ultimate title is an Ultimate Hit in both single issues and collections.
Per ICv2, the list was actually pretty surprising and diverse overall. with IDW’s hit horror book Beneath The Trees Where Nobody Sees coming in at number two on both lists, and Hell to Pay, the first collection of Charles Soule’s Shrouded College series from Image Comics hitting number three on units sold.
DC Comics continues to dominate the rest of the Top 20, though, with eight titles making the list — though six of those are in the affordable, pocket-sized Compact Comics format. The other two are Batman Day collection Joker: the World, and the first volume of last year’s Blue Beetle series.
Meanwhile, Charles Burns’s new book Final Cut debuted at number six on the list. Houses of the Unholy by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips held strong at number 10. And yep, TMNT: The Last Ronin is still on the list, though it fell to number 14.
Image Comics Has Opened Nominations For This Year’s Retailer Award:
If you know a comic book shop that goes above and beyond, now is the time to nominate them for the Fall 2024 Image Select Retailer Award.
The award recognizes comic shops that show off, per PR from Image, “exemplary customer service, thoughtful and exciting hand-selling recommendations, efforts fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment,” and much more, including, you may not be surprised to hear, support for Image Comics.
The winning store will get a commemorative medallion, an Image Select Retailer Award sticker for their window, a spotlight Q&A on Image social media platforms, and a gold foil variant, exclusive to the store.
However, if you’d like your local store to get nominated, you’ll have to hurry: the deadline is this Friday, October 11. You can fill out the form linked on the Image Comics website. The winner will be announced Wednesday, October 16, as part of the Lunar Distribution retailer event at this year’s New York Comic Con.
IDW Hires New EIC, New Turtles Editor:
It’s Editors all the way down for IDW, as the publisher has hired a new EIC who used to work on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and a new editor to take over the Turtles line.
Per ICv2, Bobby Curnow, who edited 125 issues of TMNT in his previous time at IDW, returns to the company after a two-year break to take over as Editor in Chief. Meanwhile, Andy Khouri, who worked at DC for five years and helped launch the Black Label line, is joining the company as Senior Editor for the TMNT titles.
While IDW does publish other things, this Turtles heavy hiring certainly shows a commitment to the publisher’s bread and butter — or turtle soup, if you will. Congrats to both Curnow and Khouri. Or should I say, cowabunga?
For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And they should celebrate with a pizza party. Because the Turtles love pizza.
