This is Comic Book Club News for October 9, 2024.

Wolverine Tops September Sales Charts:

Wolverine #1 sliced its way to the top of the September sales charts, winning in both units sold and dollars earned.

The charts come via ICv2, and just a note that will become important in a moment, these are sales between September 1 and October 5.

X-Men was big all over, in fact, with Uncanny X-Men #2 coming in at number two, Exceptional X-Men #1 at number four, X-Men #4 at number seven, and Uncanny X-Men #3 at number nine. In fact, Marvel took 33 of the slots in the Top 50, consistent with their performance over the past few months.

So, how about DC Comics? They only took 10 of the Top 50 slots on units sold, with three in the top 10. Those were Batman #152 at number six, Absolute Power #3 at number ten, and coming in on the first Wednesday in October, the sold-out DC All-In Special hit number eight. Curiously, the final issue of Absolute Power came in lower, at number 21 on the list. Still not a great showing for DC, but they’ve got October’s DC All In initiative just getting started, so fingers crossed.

As for other publishers, Image Comics Energon Universe continues to perform strongly, with Transformers, Scarlett, and Destro providing three of the five slots on the Top 50. And IDW still has a hit with TMNT #2, which ranked at number 13 on the list. The only other publisher who appears in the Top 50? Boom! Studios with Minor Arcana #1, which landed at number 47.

Rob Liefeld Returns To Youngblood:

They say you can’t go home again. But Rob Liefeld is puffing out his chest and pulling out all the pouches to return to Youngblood, the comic book that helped Image Comics as a player in the industry nearly 33 years ago, with a new series, merchandise, and more.

Said Liefeld via press release: “It’s so great that I can run into the comfort of characters that I created, that launched a movement. They carry such history. I love Youngblood so much. These characters are my absolute passion.”

Despite creating the characters back in 1987, Liefeld revealed in 2019 that he hasn’t had the rights to Youngblood for years — hence part of the reason he stepped away from the property seven years ago. While details are light on what the Youngblood revival means at the moment, there will be a new title written and illustrated by Liefeld that will launch from Image Comics in 2025.

In addition, the Youngblood Vault Edition will include high-resolution scans of original art from the first Youngblood series. And a Facsimile Edition of Youngblood #1 will be released in April 2025 to mark the property’s 33rd anniversary, a regular anniversary that we all know, love, and celebrate.

Skybound Hires Nachie Marsham:

Skybound continues to grow with the hiring of comic book industry veteran Nachie Marsham as Senior Editor.

Previously Publisher of IDW, as well as Executive Editor at Disney Publishing Worldwide, Marsham will join other recent hires in fleshing out the company’s editorial team. Specifically, he’ll be working on the brand’s LEGO books, and developing original comic book properties.

Said Marsham via press release: “It’s fantastic to be joining Skybound’s editorial team and coming on board to work on such a kaleidoscopic array of titles. It’s great to be with a company with such an amazing history, a murderer’s row of a backlist, an award-winning juggernaut of a front list, and a burning desire to keep pushing comics storytelling forward.”

Congrats to Marsham, and Skybound!

For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And the 33rd-anniversary gift is amethyst, which I’d say is a pretty bad rock.
