If you like your horror comics alarming, upsetting, and eminently creative, look no further than Colder by Paul Tobin and Juan Ferreyra.
Published by Dark Horse Comics, the book focuses on a man named Declan Thomas. He previously was in an insane asylum, until it burnt down in a mysterious fire. Now he has the ability to step inside the madness of others — and sometimes cure that madness. The only catch? Every time he does, he grows, per the title, colder.
The saga of Declan unfolded throughout three, five-issue miniseries: Colder, Colder: The Bad Seed, and Colder: Toss The Bones. And each one adds to the overall mythology in wildly inventive ways. But the real draw here, beyond the mystery of Declan’s powers — and curse — are Ferreyra’s unhinged visuals.
They say don’t judge a book by the cover, but you really can judge Colder by its hideously alarming issue #1 cover onward. The team doesn’t hold back when it comes to exploring madness. It’s bloody, mind-bending, and often very upsetting. Thankfully, Tobin adds a good dose of action and humor to the script so it isn’t relentlessly grim. Though the series also introduces one of the best comic book baddies of all time.
The good news is that you can get all three series in the pretty cheaply priced trade paperback for $14.99. Or if you want to try before you buy, the first issue is on sale digitally through Dark Horse for only 99 cents. But I highly recommend splurging on the book. It’s a great way to spend your cold, hard cash.

It’s spooky season, and you know what that means: time to curl up with a comic book or graphic novel that will scare your socks off.
