This week’s episode of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon had a lot of big moments, not the least of which when — well, we’ll put a spoiler warning for the event, which was 14 years in the making. But in a blink-and-you-miss-it moment, there was a sweet shout-out to one of the departed members of The Walking Dead cast: Seven, the faithful dog who played Daryl’s (Norman Reedus) canine companion, Dog.
Toward the beginning of the hour, Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi) excitedly welcomes Daryl home at Mont-Saint-Michel, after rescuing members of the Union of Hope captured by the Pouvoir des Vivants. There, Laurent gifts Daryl a small figure he’s whittled out of wood. “I love it,” Daryl says. “A little dog.”
That’s the long and the short of the interaction, but the camera does hang on it for a moment. And it’s hard not to think of Dog, who was by Daryl’s side for several seasons of The Walking Dead. And sadly, Reedus announced on June 14, 2024, that Seven, the canine actor who played Dog, had passed away.
“Gonna miss u seven,” Reedus said at the time. “Best TV buddy ever.”
Other cast members and even the official Walking Dead social accounts paid tribute to Seven, and Dog.
However, to be 100% clear, the second season of Daryl Dixon wrapped on December 21, 2023 — six months before Seven died. So this clearly was filmed way before the dog passed away, and is not an explicit tribute. But it is an implicit one, a way of including Dog in the series, even if the actual, physical dog couldn’t be there.
So RIP, Seven, and know that The Walking Dead is honoring your memory, even across the ocean in France.
