Joker 2, aka Joker: Folie à Deux, is currently tanking at the box office. And whether you heard the bad word-of-mouth, read the less-than-savory reviews, or just weren’t interested in heading to the theater this weekend, you might be curious to watch the sequel at home. So what is the Joker 2 streaming release date?
Full disclosure, with the movie just premiering in theaters on October 4, 2024, no streaming release date has been announced. That said, based on other streaming releases from Warner Bros. Discovery, we’ve got a pretty good idea of when we might see the movie hit streaming… Though the current abysmal box office definitely throws what was expected to be a billion-dollar hit into flux.
With that in mind, here’s our educated guess about when you can expect Joker: Folie à Deux to be available for rental and purchase for home viewing, as well as when you can expect it to hit Max (formerly HBO Max), and possibly Netflix.
Update, October 14, 2024: The streaming release date for Joker 2 has been announced, and it will be October 29, 2024, a little earlier than we expected. The original story follows, including speculation about the Max streaming date (though that will now likely be earlier than expected, as well.
Update, December 6, 2024: Consequently, the Max release date is also earlier than expected. Joker: Folie À Deux will stream Friday, December 13 2024 on Max, followed by a broadcast debut on HBO on Saturday, December 14 at 8pm ET. The original story (still) follows.
When Will Joker 2 aka Joker: Folie à Deux Be Streaming? Here’s Our Educated Guess About The Joker 2 Streaming Release Date
Way back five years ago, Joker hit theaters on October 4, 2019. The movie went on to become a billion-dollar hit and came to digital rental and sale on December 17, 2019. It then went to DVD and Blu-Ray on January 7, 2020. So it’s reasonable to look at that and say that Joker 2 could follow a similar pattern, meaning it will be streaming on December 17, 2024.
Except! Not only was that a whole five years ago, but HBO Max hadn’t even launched yet. We’re in a very different streaming world now, and it’s like comparing apples to much weirder apples. In fact, after the launch of HBO Max, movies would stream 45 days after theatrical release — but that changed when the company became Warner Bros. Discovery, and HBO Max is now called Max. The point is, that December 17 date is sketchy, at best.
Three much more accurate points of comparison here are the 2024 movies Furiosa: A Mad Max Story, Twisters, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The former was a dud at the box office, similar to how Joker 2 is playing out. Twisters was a hit, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is also a hit, and still in theaters. So let’s see what the windows were/are like with the three of those Warner Bros. Discovery flicks.
Furiosa opened on May 24, 2024 theatrically. It was released on VOD platforms like Fandango, Prime Video, Apple, and more exactly one month later, on June 24, 2024. It then hit Max on August 16, 2024.
Since Furiosa wasn’t exactly a hit, that’s why they rushed it out a month later, right? Well, wrong. Twisters hit theaters on July 19, 2024, and less than a month later on August 13, 2024, was available for purchase or rental digitally. A Max (or other) streaming release has yet to be announced for this one, just as an additional point of info. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, meanwhile, opened on September 6, 2024, and will hit PVOD (Premium Video on Demand) on October 8, 2024. Again, about a month later.
Given all that info, regardless of box office performance, Joker: Folie à Deux will likely be available for rental and purchase for home streaming a month after release. Since new home releases come out on Tuesdays, there’s a good chance that Joker 2 will be available to stream on November 5, 2024. AKA, election day, which is just the twisted sort of thing The Joker (Joaquin Phoenix) would love.
When Will Joker 2 aka Joker: Folie à Deux Be On Max (Formerly HBO Max)?
So that’s the Joker 2 streaming release date. Since we don’t have Max release dates yet for Twisters and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, let’s look at the window for Furiosa. There were 84 days between the theatrical release and the Max streaming release. That’s about standard, usually around 90 days for most streaming releases (though it varies by company and movie).
That said, if you look at the release of Dune Part 2, it hit theaters on March 1, 2024, and was released on Max on May 24, 2024. That’s — once again — 84 days. What about Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire? That hit theaters on March 29, 2024, and then Max on July 4, 2024, which is a much longer span of 97 days. It may be an aberration though, as Wonka was released on December 15, 2023, and hit Max on March 8, 2024. Again, 84 days.
Given that, there’s a very good chance that Joker: Folie à Deux will be streaming on Max on Friday, December 27, 2024. Given the holidays, though, it’s possible it could debut a few days earlier, on December 25, 2025. Merry Christmas?
When Will Joker 2 aka Joker: Folie à Deux Be On Netflix?
Time was, Warner Bros. Discovery movies only went to Max. Then in November of 2023, CEO David Zaslav decided they could go to Netflix, as well. And in fact, a slew of DC movies headed to the rival streaming service in December of 2023. So will Joker 2 stream on Netflix?
Maybe? At some point? Unfortunately, there’s no good data here as they dumped nearly every modern DC movie on Netflix on December 1, 2023, regardless of age. At the very least, I’d expect that if Joker: Folie à Deux heads to Netflix, it won’t be until at least nine months to a year later. It’ll likely live on Max for a while, and then potentially head to another streaming service — such as Netflix — sometime in the Fall of 2025.
