Marvel‘s Ultimate Universe is expanding this January as it enters its second year. And that means going cosmic, as the Ultimate Guardians of the Galaxy arrive in The Ultimates #8. Not only that, but Ultimate Kraven goes on an Ultimate last hunt, Moon Knight and Black Panther go mano a mano, and the X-Men finally put on some costumes.
But let’s start with the new Guardians, who include Star-Lord, Captain Marvel, Ultimate Nullifier, and Cosmo. Not your typical lineup, but they feature designs by Juan Frigeri, so these bunch of a-holes still look real good.
“The creative goal we set for ourselves on ULTIMATES — in addition to telling complete stories every issue — was to create (or recreate) characters interesting enough to sustain readers’ imaginations and their own series, if they had to,” Ultimates writer Deniz Camp explained via a press release provided to Comic Book Club. “Whether we’ve succeeded on either count is up to the readers to decide, but the reaction so far has been really special. I am so grateful for it, and am doing my best to be worthy of it.”
The new Guardians are from the future and have traveled through time to find their missing teammates. Not only that, but they also may hold the key to helping the Ultimates take down the Maker when he returns in one year’s time.
“Issue eight introduces the Ultimate Guardians of the Galaxy, and I hope readers enjoy meeting the heroes of the future as much as I enjoyed writing them!” Camp continued. “It’s our most cosmic issue to date, the life and death of universes in 20 pages, and explores new sides of the Ultimate Universe through Ultimate America Chavez, who has quickly become a favorite of mine.”
